YouTube Video: How to Find Furniture Made in the USA

How to Find Furniture Made in the USA

No home is complete without furniture. When buying furniture for your home, you want to ensure it is comfortable and stylish. But you also want to make sure the furniture is built to last. For some, that means choosing furniture made in the USA. If you’re looking for quality furniture, there are a few tricks to help you find good products made in the USA.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), for a product to be advertised as “made in the USA,” it must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. That means all significant parts and processing must occur in the USA. And while there are no hard-and-fast rules about what can and can’t be considered “significant,” the FTC says that products should have no — or only negligible — foreign content.

So, if you’re looking for furniture that’s truly made in America, check the materials used and the labels on the products and ask questions to ensure that it meets the FTC’s standards. You can find more information in our detailed “made in the USA” guide.

Materials

Furniture can be made from all sorts of materials. For a product to be authentically “made in the USA,” all materials used in its construction must be sourced domestically. Here are some of the most common materials used in furniture-making, along with where they’re usually sourced

Wood

Most wood furniture is made with hardwoods like maple, oak, or cherry. Softwoods like pine are also sometimes used, though they’re not as durable. Many countries worldwide produce wooded furniture, but most comes from China, the United States, and Canada.

The USA ranks second in the world in terms of wood production. In fact, the United States has the highest production of hardwood lumber, so you can easily find furniture made from American-sourced wood.

Metal

Furniture made with metal is typically either steel or aluminum.

Steel

China is the world’s leading steel producer, producing half of the world’s steel. On the other hand, the United States ranks fourth in steel production. Although much of the steel used in furniture is made in China, quality matters. US steel is three times stronger than Chinese steel.

Aluminum

Similarly, China produces a vast majority of the world’s aluminum. The United States does produce some aluminum but at a much lower rate than other countries. So, if you buy aluminum furniture, it’s worth doing some additional research to ensure you’re buying something that is US-made.

Fabric

Fabric is often used as upholstery on furniture, particularly sofas and chairs. The fabric used in upholstered furniture can vary, but cotton and polyester are the most common.

Cotton

The United States produces a significant amount of cotton every year. However, although cotton is a 21 billion dollar industry in the USA, many countries in Asia make this material too. So, do your research to ensure that the cotton used in the product is grown and sourced in the United States.

Polyester

China is the number one producer of polyester in the world. However, US companies like Eastman Chemical Company and William Barnet & Son are two of the world’s top 10 polyester-producing companies. So, finding polyester made in the USA shouldn’t be too difficult of a feat.

Leather

Leather is another common material used in upholstered furniture. It’s usually sourced from China, which produces 25% of the world’s leather. However, the United States is a leading producer of leather as well. In particular, if you’re after quality full-grain or top-grain leather, you should look for American-made leather. American-made exotic leather may be more difficult to find, but cowhide is commonly made in the USA.

Labeling

When looking for furniture made in the USA, keep an eye out for labels that can verify its country of origin. Companies are required to label their products with the country of origin. Specifically, if you’re looking for a US-made product, you should look for the FTC-protected “made in the USA” label.

Since the “made in the USA” label is protected, many companies will try to get around it by using similar phrases and words to trick customers. For example, companies may use tags like “assembled in the USA” or “designed in the USA”, which indicate only a part of the manufacturing process took place in the United States.

Another misleading term to look out for is “made in America.” This indicates that the product could have been made in Canada or Mexico instead of the USA.

Keep in mind that some companies may use the American flag. But just because the flag is on the label does not necessarily mean the item is made in the United States. So look at everything with a critical eye!

It is also worth noting that the FTC does not necessarily do the best job policing the usage of the label “made in the USA.” There is no pre-approval process, so it is up to the companies to determine whether or not their products meet the criteria. Ultimately, consumers must do additional research to ensure that the products are truly made in the USA.

Other Tips

In addition to looking for labels, there are a few other ways you can find American-made furniture.

Check The Company Website

First, check the company’s website. Companies that manufacture products made in the USA will advertise this fact prominently. You can check the “About Us” section or the product page to see if the company mentions this.

Keep in mind that companies are not required to state the country of origin of their products on their websites, so silence speaks volumes in this case. If the company does not state where their products are made, assume that their furniture is made overseas.

Do Some Research

A bit of research can go a long way. First, try looking up the company online to see if there are any articles or press releases about their manufacturing processes. You can also check online forums and social media to see if anyone has experience with the company or its products.

Call Them

If you are still unsure about a product, you can always call the retailer and ask them directly. They should be able to tell you where their furniture is made and whether it meets the “made in the USA” criteria.

Furniture Not Made in the USA

Here are some popular furniture brands that are not made domestically.

  • Universal Furniture – They push “shop local” a lot, but most of their manufacturing happens in Asia.
  • Ashley Furniture – Mostly made in China and Vietnam.
  • IKEA – Swedish brand that mostly manufactures in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, and other countries in Asia and Eastern Europe.
  • West Elm – A lot of manufacturing in India, although some pieces are made in North America.
  • Coaster Furniture – Imported
  • Hooker Furniture – Asia, Mexico, and Central America mostly.
  • Article – Everything made in Asian countries.
  • MoDRN – Imported
  • RH – Made in China
