How to Find Office Chairs Made in the USA

Alright, now that we’ve given you some recommendations on American made office chairs, we also want to educate you on how to conduct research of you’re own. Below, we go through the current state of manufacturing for office chairs in the US, tips on labels to look for, and other notes to equip you to shop confidently. First, let’s dive into the “made in the USA” language and how to interpret it.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

The first step in this journey is to define what it means for an office chair to be made in the USA. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires products to be “all or virtually all” manufactured in the United States for a company to use the phrase “made in the USA” when promoting them. Furthermore, according to the FTC, all significant parts must be sourced from here.

The best way to find office chairs that are 100% made in the USA, or as close as possible, is to consider the materials and labeling. Keep reading for more information on these topics, and be sure to check out our  “made in the USA” guide.

Materials

Below, you will find a list of the materials used to manufacture office chairs and their usual country or countries of origin to help you find those made in the USA.

Solid Wood

Your best bet for getting a domestically made desk chair is to look for ones made from solid hardwood such as cherry, maple, walnut, or oak. This type of wood is beautiful and durable enough to last a lifetime and is often sourced from the United States. In fact, the U.S. produces more hardwood lumber than any other nation in the world.

Fiberboard

Fiberwood, also referred to as composite wood, engineered wood, or MDF wood, is made from fresh or recycled wood pieces. Office chairs made from this material are easier on the budget than hardwood, but some are flimsy.

Fiberboard production began in the 1960s in the United States before spreading to other countries, but some composite wood is still manufactured domestically.

Metal

Office chairs have some steel or aluminum components. Unfortunately, nearly half of the world’s steel comes from China. Still, the United States ranks fourth in global production of this metal, and U.S. steel is three times stronger than the Chinese variety.

You won’t have much luck finding an office chair with aluminum components that’s made in the USA. Most of the the world’s aluminum supply comes from China, while the United States lags far behind.

Leather

The highest quality office chairs tend to have leather cushions. Luckily, the United States has a healthy leather industry – at least when it comes to cowhide. Other types of leather most likely were sourced from other countries. If you see the phrase “genuine leather,” be cautious because this includes all kinds of leather, not just cowhide.

Polyester

Some office chairs have polyester upholstery. Most of the the world’s supply of this material comes from China, with the U.S. ranking third in polyester production. But two of the top 10 polyester companies in the world are in the United States, so you can find an office chair with polyester cushions made here.

Foam

Foam is the most common filling for chair cushions. China may lead the world in foam production, but fortunately, the United States is also a key player in this industry. This will help you in your quest for an office chair made in the USA.

Labeling

If you are shopping in a brick-and-mortar retail location, the easiest way to determine if an item was made in the USA is to check the label because brands are required by U.S. law to list the country of origin there. However, when it comes to office chairs, you may not have much luck finding domestic ones in big box stores. This means you will need to look online, where there’s no physical label to examine.

The FTC protects the phrase “made in the USA,” but some companies try to trick online shoppers by using phrases such as “designed in the USA” or “assembled in the USA,” which could mask that at least some of the manufacturing process for an item took place overseas.

You should also be cautious when you see “made in America” or “made in North America” on brand websites, as that could indicate the product was produced in Canada or Mexico.

Final Tips

If you have taken all the above steps and are still unsure where an office chair was made, you can search for online articles about the company’s manufacturing process. However, the easiest solution is to simply contact the company and ask a representative where the chair was produced and what countries the components and materials were sourced from.
