How to Find Hats Made in the USA

In addition to telling you which companies make their hats in the USA, we also give you the tools to do your research. Below you will find out how to determine if a hat is American-made based on the label, materials sourcing, and more.

Materials

Looking for hats made in the USA requires knowledge about the materials they are made of. The country of origin for these fabrics will give you a clue as to the likelihood of a hat being made here.

Polyester

Polyester is a popular fabric for hats due to its affordability, durability, and resistance to water. For every style of hat you can think of, there’s probably a polyester version of it.

The United States is the third-leading producer of polyester in the world. Although America doesn’t make as much of this synthetic fabric as China, the No. 1 polyester producer, U.S. companies Eastman Chemical Company and William Barnet & Son do their part to make it fairly easy to find polyester hats made here.

Cotton

Cotton is commonly used to make sun hats, baseball caps, and other hats worn during the warmer months because of its breathability and softness. In addition, cotton – particularly cotton twill – is durable.

Half of the cotton in the world is produced in either China or India. The United States comes in third, so it’s not hard to find American-made cotton hats. A simple way to find out if a hat was made in the USA is to look for the phrase “U.S. grown cotton” or similar language.

Acrylic

Acrylic hats are incredibly popular because they are inexpensive, hold their shape well, and are easy to wash. They are also a good option for those with sensitive skin.

But how likely are you to find acrylic hats made in the USA?

China is the global leader in acrylic fabric production, while India is the fastest-growing acrylic producer in the world. Some of this fabric is still made in the US., but nowhere near as much as in the past. This means you will have to do some searching if you want a domestically-made acrylic beanie.

Wool

Some consumers prefer wool hats because they are water-resistant. This means they keep your head dry even in rain or snow. They also feel incredibly soft against the skin, as long as you aren’t allergic to wool. In addition, wool is a breathable fabric, so you can even find ones suitable for warmer weather. However, wool can be expensive and is more difficult to care for than acrylic.

The United States makes about 17% of the world’s wool. That’s considerably less than Australia, the world’s leading wool producer, but you can still find American-made wool hats if you do your research.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says the phrase “Made in the USA” should only be used when advertising a product if “all or virtually all” of it is made in the United States. This means the item must not only be manufactured here, but the raw materials must also be sourced from the USA.

Here’s our “made in the USA” labeling guide.

Labeling

Another helpful tool for shoppers is Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code, which states the country where an item was manufactured must appear on the label or the packaging. So, when looking for American-made hats, you should look for the phrase “Made in the USA” in those places.

You should be aware, however, that not all brands are completely honest about the country of origin of their products. They will sometimes use language similar to “Made in the USA,” but not quite. Phrases like “Manufactured in the USA,” “Designed in the USA,” and “Made in America” often mean a product wasn’t 100% made here. Also, look out for the phrase “Made in the USA with imported materials.”

Shoppers should also keep in mind that even though the federal government supposedly protects the use of the “Made in the USA” label, there’s no pre-approval process. This means brands can determine themselves if a product is made in the USA, which is a recipe for fudging the truth. Should you encounter misuse of the “Made in the USA” label, reporting it will help keep manufacturers honest.

Final Tips

Want more tips for finding hats made in the USA? Here you go!

The presence of the American flag on an item doesn’t guarantee it was made here. The U.S. government doesn’t protect this image, so be careful.

Shopping in person is the best way to ensure products you buy are made in the USA because you can check the actual label for the country of origin. However, the shift to online shopping means more and more brick-and-mortar retail storefronts are closing every day.

However, even if you have no choice but to search for products online, you can still determine if the hat you want to buy was made here. If a brand makes all or some of its products 100% in the USA, they are usually eager to advertise that. You can typically find that information on their “About Us” page and by checking the descriptions for individual items. Sometimes the country of origin will be stated there. However, companies are not legally required to do this, so if you can’t determine online if a hat you like was made in the USA, it’s probably safe to assume it wasn’t.

If you do all this research and are still not sure if the hat you are considering was made in the USA, call the company, send them an email, or chat with them online. With luck, a customer service representative will answer your questions.

Below are some well-known brands that don’t make their hats here. We will add additional companies to this list as we find them.
