How To Find Pants Made in the USA

Whether you are looking for a good pair of men’s dress pants or looking for a breezy linen pair for the summer, a good pair of pants should last you a few years. But unfortunately, as manufacturing has shifted abroad, the quality of clothing, including pants, has decreased. So to find a good quality pair of pants, you should look at pants made in the USA. With most clothing manufactured abroad, how do you find pants made in the USA? Here are a few tips.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

First, let’s define what it means for something to be “made in the USA.” The “made in the USA” label is protected by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). To qualify as “made in the USA,” the product must be “all or virtually all” made in the USA. This means everything from the sourcing of the raw materials to the manufacturing of the product must take place in the United States.

Check out our “made in the USA” labeling guide to learn more. Now, let’s get back to pants manufacturing specifically.

Materials

To find pants made in the USA, you should research the materials used in the product. Learning about the source material and where they usually come from can be a great jumping-off point to finding pants made in the USA.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the most widely used materials for clothing. In terms of pants, cotton is used for chinos and jeans, among other types of pants. They are a durable and versatile material.

Cotton is generally sourced from China and India. However, the United States does not fall too far behind in cotton production. In fact, cotton is a 21 billion dollar industry in the USA. So, cotton grown and produced in the USA should not be difficult to find.

Polyester

Polyester is a popular material used in pants. They are often used as a blend of cotton and other materials.

As with most other fabrics, polyester is mainly produced in China. However, the United States is a significant producer of polyester as well, ranking third in the world. Specifically, Eastman Chemical Company and William Barnet & Son are two of the top 10 polyester-producing companies worldwide. So, finding US-made polyester should not be too tricky.

Wool

Wool is used for thicker and more durable pants that can also be worn in the winter. Most dress pants will be made of a wool and polyester blend.

Australia produces the most wool in the world. On the other hand, the United States ranks third, making about 17% of the world’s wool. This is not an insignificant amount, so finding US-made wool should be more than possible, though it is not as easy as it may be to find cotton.

Linen

Linen is the world’s strongest natural fiber – stronger even than cotton. It is also an incredibly breathable material, making it a popular fiber choice for summer pants.

Linen is made from flax yarn. There are thousands of years of history of flax in China, and China still ranks first in flax yarn exports. China also has the largest linen manufacturing plant in the world. Italy and Tunisia are also major players in the flax yarn industry. Unfortunately, no significant flax yarn or linen industry exists in the USA. This means if you are after linen pants, you will, more likely than not, have to settle for foreign-made linen.

Labeling

The second step in finding US-made pants is to look at the label. The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act helps determine where products are made. Due to this act, companies must be transparent about the fiber content of their textile products and include the country of origin. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code also states that products must be appropriately labeled with the country of origin on the product’s labeling or the packaging.

So, when looking for US-made pants, you should look specifically for the “made in the USA” label. Be careful of tricky phrases and words companies may use to confuse you into thinking their products are made in the USA. For example, words like “manufactured” and “designed” mean that only a part of the manufacturing process took place in the United States. Or phrases like “made in America” or “made in the USA with imported materials” may be used.

As a side note: although the “made in the USA” label is protected, there is no pre-approval process. So, it is up to the companies to determine whether their products meet the requirements to use the label. Then, as a consumer, it is up to you to report any false usage of the label.

Other Tips

Here are some more tips to help you find pants made in the USA.

Don’t Be Fooled By the American Flag

The American flag on a label does not automatically mean that the product is made in the USA. The usage of the flag is not protected like the “made in the USA” label, so take it with a grain of salt.

Check the Website

Many people don’t shop in person anymore, instead relying on online shopping. In this case, the best way to find out where the pants are made is to check the company’s website.

Look at the company’s “About Us” or the product page. If the pants are US-made, the company will advertise this fact loudly and clearly as it is a huge selling point. On the contrary, if you can’t find any information about where the product is made, assume it is made overseas. Companies are not required to properly label their products online, so the silence speaks volumes in this case.

Call the Company

If you’re still unsure of where a particular pair of pants are made from, kick it old school and call the company. The customer service team should be able to answer your questions.

Pants Not Made in the USA

Here are some major brands that are not made in the USA. We’ll keep adding to this list over time.
