How to Find Dining Tables Made in the USA

There is a lot to consider when shopping for a dining table, including size, style, and materials. You also want to buy the most durable table you can afford. Your best bet is to look for models made in the USA. Below is our guide on how to do that.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires any product marketed as “made in the USA” must be “all or virtually all” manufactured domestically, with all significant parts sourced from the USA. In other words, the product should have no or very little foreign material in it.

The best way to find dining tables that are 100% or nearly 100% made in the USA is to check the materials they are made from and the labeling. For more information, check out our “made in the USA” shopping guide, which we cover in-depth below exclusively for dining tables.

Materials

A variety of materials can be used in making dining tables. All the materials must be domestically sourced for a table to be considered “made in the USA.” To help you out, we’ve listed the most popular dining table materials below and the countries they usually come from.

Solid Wood

Many people swear by dining tables made from solid wood, particularly hardwoods. As the name implies, hardwood is sturdy, so tables made from there will last a lifetime or more. You can buy tables made of softwood, such as pine, but they aren’t as durable as their hardwood counterparts.

The United States is the top-ranking country for producing hardwood lumber, such as oak, maple, walnut, and cherry. This is why it is much easier to find dining tables made in the USA – especially those with solid wood legs and tops – than other products.

Fiberboard

This material, commonly used in dining tables, goes by many names, including composite wood, engineered wood, and MDF wood. It is made from pieces of fresh or recycled wood that are steamed and sprayed with adhesives. This mix is then hot-pressed, cooled, trimmed, and sanded. Sometimes these pieces are veneered or laminated.

Dining tables produced with fiberboard are less expensive than ones made from solid wood. However, they aren’t as durable.

Fiberboard production began in the United States in the 1960s. Other countries are also producing it, but you can still find fiberboard tables made in the USA.

Steel

Some dining table legs are made from steel. China, which makes 50% of this metal, is the global leader in steel production. Although the United States is only fourth among steel-producing countries, it ranks high in quality. In fact, US steel is three times stronger than steel from China.

Aluminum

Aluminum is another metal used in table legs. Unfortunately, China produces an even higher percentage of the world’s aluminum than steel, while the United States lags far behind. So, if you find a table you love with aluminum legs, we advise you to research to see if that aluminum was produced domestically.

Glass

Some modern dining tables have glass tops. Your odds of finding an American-made table in this style aren’t great since the United States makes just 6.5% of the world’s glass. (China, which produces nearly 25%, is the global leader in glass production). However, the USA does have some artisans that blow glass, so you might get lucky.

Labeling

When shopping for dining tables made in the USA, look for labels that tell you what country they came from. Manufacturers of all products must indicate the country of origin on labels. Moreover, the Federal Trade Commission protects the “made in the USA” label.

However, be on the lookout for phrases such as “assembled in the USA” or “designed in the USA” because some companies use this language to mislead shoppers. These phrases often mean some elements of the production process for the table took place outside the US.

Some brands also might label products as “made in America.” If you see this phrase, the item may have been manufactured in Canada or Mexico.

Another red flag could be using the American flag on the label. Unlike the phrase “made in the USA,” the image of the Stars and Stripes is not protected. This means its presence is NOT a guarantee a product was made here.

Consumers should also remember that even the “made in the USA” label isn’t foolproof. The FTC doesn’t have a pre-approval process companies must follow to use that language, so brands decide for themselves whether their products meet the criteria. Therefore, shoppers need to do their research to guarantee that what they are buying was made here.

More Tips

Here are some additional ways to find dining tables made in the USA.

Check Online

Look at the brand’s website. When companies make products domestically, they like to emphasize that in their marketing because they know it’s a good selling point. A good way to determine if a brand has committed to manufacturing in the USA is to click on links labeled “About Us” or “Our Story.”

However, there’s no legal mandate for brands to indicate where their products come from on their websites. Sometimes a company will state in a product description that an item is imported, but others don’t even do that. If they don’t, you should assume that the dining table was not produced in the USA.

Do Your Research

When in doubt, do some digging. Do an online search on the company to find out if there are any news stories or press releases about where their products are made. Online message boards and social media platforms are another good place to look because another shopper looking for USA-made dining tables may have already done some research.

Make a Phone Call

It might save you some time to call the furniture company and ask where their dining tables are made and where the materials are sourced.
