How to Find Desks Made in the USA
When buying a desk, you need to consider how big a space you have for it, as well as functionality and style. A high-quality model can be worth the price as it will last a lifetime. Desks made in the USA tend to be handcrafted and built with solid wood, so you can be sure they are durable. Here are our tips on how to find your dream desk that’s made here.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) mandates that any item advertised as being “made in the USA” must be “all or virtually all” manufactured here, with all significant parts sourced domestically. In short, the item should contain no or very little imported material.
So, what’s the best way to find a desk that’s completely made in the USA? The answer is to look at the materials and labeling. See our how to find “made in the USA” shopping guide for more general details, which we cover in-depth just for desks below.
Materials
Several materials are used to make desks. To be considered “made in the USA,” a desk must be built entirely with domestically sourced materials. Here are the most common materials used to manufacture desks and where they are typically sourced from.
Solid Wood
The best way to find a desk made in the USA is to narrow your search to those built with solid hardwood. These desks are beautiful as well as durable, and because the U.S. ranks first in the world in the production of hardwood lumber, you shouldn’t have trouble finding exactly what you want.
Fiberboard
This material is also called composite wood, engineered wood, or MDF wood. Production involves steaming fresh or recycled solid wood and applying adhesives. The next steps are hot-pressing, cooling, trimming, and sanding.
Desks made with fiberboard are popular because they are inexpensive compared to their solid wood counterparts. On the other hand, they won’t last as long.
The United States was the first country to produce fiberboard. Production of this material has spread to other countries since its debut in the 1960s, but some of it is still manufactured here. This means if you don’t have the cash to invest in a solid wood desk, you can find a fiberboard one that’s made in the USA.
Metal
Metal desks have some advantages, especially if you want a sleek, ultramodern look. Unlike wooden desks, these steel or aluminum models are stain and scuff-resistant.
China leads the world in steel production at 50%. The United States only ranks fourth, but if you can find a domestically-made steel desk, you can be assured of its durability because US steel is three times stronger than Chinese steel.
Some metal desks are made from aluminum. China produces the majority of the world’s aluminum, while the United States doesn’t manufacture much of this material. Therefore, if you have your heart set on a metal table, you might be better off looking at ones made of US steel.
Glass
Glass desktops make a strong design statement, but those made in the USA are challenging to find. China produces nearly a quarter of the world’s glass, making it the global leader. In contrast, the United States only produces 6.5%. Some American artisans blow their own glass, so that might be a place to look if you want a desk with a glass top.
Labeling
All product manufacturers must include the item’s country of origin on labels. In addition, the use of the “made in the USA” label is protected by the FTC.
However, consumers looking for US-made products should be on their guard when they see phrases such as “assembled in the USA” or “designed in the USA” because they may be misleading. The wording could mean some of the manufacturing process took place overseas.
Labels that say “made in America” also could give shoppers the wrong idea. This phrase is sometimes used on products made in Mexico and Canada, which are part of North America.
You also should be cautious when you see an American flag on a label because this image is not protected. The product might not be made entirely in the USA.
To complicate things, even the phrase “made in the USA” on a company’s website doesn’t guarantee the product was 100% manufactured domestically. That’s because no FTC approval process is needed to get permission to use that phrase, meaning it’s up to individual companies to determine if the items they make meet the government’s criteria.
All this means it’s up to the consumer to research products to determine if they are genuinely made in the USA.
Additional Tips
More ways you can find made- in-the-USA desks are listed below.
Look Online
Check out the manufacturer’s website. Brands that make their items in the USA like to advertise that fact because of the large number of consumers looking for domestically-manufactured products. Be sure to click on links labeled “Our Story” or “About Us” because these website sections sometimes give you a complete rundown of the manufacturing process, including product sourcing. You can also look at product descriptions, which may list the country of origin or at least list non-domestic products as “imported.”
Unfortunately, companies are not legally obligated to provide any of this information online. Therefore, if a product isn’t explicitly described as being made in the USA, it’s safe to assume it wasn’t made here.
Do Some Digging
When in doubt, do your research. Look online for news stories or press releases about brands to find out where their products come from. It’s also a good idea to check out social media platforms or message boards to see if other consumers on the hunt for made in the USA products have had success finding a desk that’s made here.
Get on the Phone
The simplest way to determine if a product is made in the USA is to call the company directly. Hopefully, a customer service representative will be able to tell you where an item was manufactured as well as the countries of origin for the materials.
