How To Find Patio Furniture Made in the USA

Buying US-made patio furniture is a great way to support your local craftsman or furniture manufacturer. When you buy patio furniture made in the USA, you get the quality assurance that comes with the label – built well and made to last. In addition, because patio furniture can be bulky, imported furniture can have massive emissions and environmental impacts. So it’s a great idea to buy patio furniture made in the USA to do your part for the earth and your country.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

First, it is essential to understand what it means for something to be “made in the USA.” To use the “made in the USA” label, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that “all or virtually all” of the product be made in the United States. In other words, every significant part and processing must occur in the United States to earn this label.

For patio furniture to be considered “made in the USA,” the product must be made from materials that are sourced and processed in the United States. For example, if the patio furniture is made from wood sourced from Canada and the rest of the product is made in the USA, the patio furniture cannot be considered “made in the USA.”

Check out our detailed American made labeling guide for more information on the “made in the USA” label.

Materials

To find patio furniture made in the USA, you need to know the materials commonly used to make these products and where they are sourced from.

Wood

Several types of wood are used in furniture manufacturing. The two main types of wood are hardwoods and softwoods, but if you’re after quality, you should only be looking at hardwoods. Examples of hardwoods include oak and maple. Although China outranks the United States as the top producer of hardwoods in the world, the United States does not fall far behind. The United States provides a significant amount of hardwoods for your patio furniture! As a consumer, asking about the type of wood used in your patio furniture is essential to make an informed decision.

Steel and Stainless Steel

Steel is a common material used for metal patio furniture. The USA is one of the world’s largest steel manufacturers, coming in fourth only behind China, Japan, and India. This means that finding US-made steel is not as difficult as you might think.

However, keep an eye out for patio furniture made of lower-quality steel, which generally suggests the steel is imported. Imported steel is often cheaper, thinner, and less durable than domestic steel. High-quality steel is much more likely to be sourced from a domestic supplier. In fact, American-made steel is three times stronger than its Chinese-made counterpart! If you are after quality, USA-made steel patio furniture should be your choice.

Plastic

Plastic may be the material to go for if you are after cheap, weatherproof patio furniture!

Although China is the number one producer of plastic, the USA produces 20% of the world’s plastic – not an insignificant amount! It is true that you are more likely to come across plastic made in China. However, you should be able to find American-made plastic easily with some research.

Labeling

When looking for patio furniture made in the USA, you must pay attention to the labeling. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code states that all imported products must be labeled as such. The labeling helps differentiate the patio furniture made in the USA from the ones made abroad. When searching for patio furniture made in the USA, look specifically for the “made in the USA” label.

Mislabeling a product as “made in the USA” is prohibited by law. However, the FTC does not pre-approve products, so it is up to the company to determine whether its product is genuinely made in the USA. As a consumer, if you believe the labeling is misleading, you can let the FTC know. The FTC investigates complaints and takes action when necessary.

You must also watch out for misleading labels such as “assembled in the USA” or “designed in the USA.” These labels do not mean the product is made in the USA. Similarly, labels like “made in America” are used to confuse consumers because America can also refer to Canada and Mexico.

The American flag sticker is another thing you need to be cautious about. American flags on labels are not regulated, so if you see an American flag on a product, it does not necessarily mean that the product is made in the United States.

Other Tips

Here are some tips to help you find patio furniture made in the USA.

Check the Company’s Website

When shopping for patio furniture online, an excellent way to tell if a product is made in the United States is to check the company’s website. Specifically, you should check out the “About Us” page, the product page, or the FAQ page.

Companies only have to state the country of origin on the physical product itself – this means online and promotional materials do not necessarily give you the information you need. So, if the product does not list its country of origin, you can assume the product is most likely made overseas. However, if the product is made in the USA, you should see this on the company’s website, as it is a huge selling point.

Go Online Shopping

Sites like Amazon will often state the country of origin on the Product Description section of the product page. If you can’t find the country of origin there, you can also check the FAQ.

Ask The Company

If you are still unsure about the patio furniture you are after, you should call the company to get the necessary information. A company representative should be able to provide you with the information you need to be an informed consumer.
