When you want the ruggedness of an off-road vehicle but the high-end glam of a luxury design, look no further than Land Rover. This car style that we’re familiar with today first took shape back in the 1940s.
Maurice Wilks was a designer for the automobile brand: Rover Company. When he introduced his idea of a vehicle built on Jeep chassis and axles, it was originally military-like in style and field tested. The style caught the attention of the adventurous and those enthralled by the idea of an off-road vehicle.
In 1955, Land Rover sponsored a team of engineers on an expedition from London to Singapore, in a Land Rover, of course, to demonstrate the vehicle’s capabilities. The Range Rover was introduced in 1970, and nearly twenty years later, the Discovery and Defender models followed.
Land Rover is a branch of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and is owned by the parent company, Tata Motors, an Indian automobile manufacturer. While Tata Motors is headquartered in Mumbai, India, Land Rover keeps its home in Whitley, United Kingdom.
The company got its start in London, and its headquarters remain there today. But where are the cars manufactured? Let’s find out.
Verdict: Where Are Land Rover Cars Made?
Land Rover manufactures the majority of their vehicles in the United Kingdom. There are other factory locations around the world, including in China and Austria. The United States does not manufacture any vehicles for Land Rover.
Aside from dealerships, there is only one official Land Rover facility located in the United States. It is the Research & Innovation Center in Portland, Oregon. This center focuses on the development of vehicle design and electrical architecture systems.
Land Rover was acquired by Tata Motors in 2008, but it was not until 2024 that they began manufacturing their vehicles at Tata Motors’ plants in India. Previously, all Land Rovers were manufactured in the UK. This move was driven by the rapid growth in popularity of Range Rovers in India and the need to establish a local production and delivery model.
