How to Find Socks Made in the USA
Let’s slip into the realm of socks manufacturing. Rather than just handing you a laundry list of American-made socks, let’s deck you out with the know-how to research and score socks like a pro. Here’s a closer peek into the world of sock crafting – from material sourcing to decoding those “made in the USA” labels, alongside some savvy shopping strategies to snag those top-notch sock brands crafted right here. But first, let’s untangle the mystery behind what “made in the USA” truly means and how to decipher it.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
Before diving into how to find socks made in the USA, let’s define what it means for something to be made in the USA. According to Federal Trade Commission (FTC), “made in the USA” means:
- Assembling of a product takes place in the USA
- Raw materials come from the USA
- The amount spent on making or processing that product comes from the USA
Although the above guidelines seem pretty straightforward, the reality is that the “made in the USA” label can be misused, which we’ll dig into a bit deeper below. For a complete breakdown of the FTC guidelines, look at the “made in the USA” labeling guide.
Materials
As mentioned earlier, when any manufacturer claims that their products are made in the USA, the products must be entirely made in the USA only, including the raw material used. Therefore, it is vital to research the raw material and see how common it is to find these materials in the USA. For socks, the most common materials used are cotton, wool, merino wool, and polyester.
Cotton
Cotton is the most commonly used fiber for sock manufacturing worldwide. Yearly, the US earns $21 billion from the cotton industry. Most of its production occurs in southern and western parts of the US, contributing about 40% of US cotton production. The USA does not do too badly in terms of the world’s production of this raw material, ranking behind just China and India. All in all, American-made cotton should not be overly challenging to find.
Wool
Wool is the second most commonly used fiber for sock manufacturing. It is sourced or shorn from sheep and lambs. Unfortunately, USA wool production is declining yearly, producing only 17% of the world’s wool and ranking third worldwide. In comparison, Australia dominates globally in wool production. However, 17% of the world’s wool is not an insignificant amount. Therefore, finding US-shorn and US-produced wool for your socks should not be difficult.
Merino Wool
Merino is another standard wool fiber produced by merino sheep and is very gentle, thinner, softer, and more water-resistant than regular wool. As a result, it has become a more popular choice for those looking for a quality pair of socks.
Polyester
Polyester is much stronger, softer, and more durable than cotton and merino wool. The USA was the first country to produce polyester, and it still remains one of the top producers of this material. The USA-based companies Eastman Chemical Company and William Barnet & Son are among the world’s top polyester staple fiber manufacturers.
Labeling
Besides researching the materials of the socks, some US legislation helps us to find US-made products. For example, the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act and Wool Products Labeling Act make it mandatory to properly label products with the following:
- The fiber material used.
- Percentage of the fiber content.
- The country of origin.
Additionally, as per the US code Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304, any imported product or material must be labeled as such. And for socks made from fur, it is necessary to label imported furs as per Fur Products Labeling Act.
These acts help us to find products made in the USA. And for this reason, the “made in the USA” label is protected by the FTC. This label can only be used if “all or virtually all” of the product is made in the United States. However, the FTC doesn’t do the best job in policing the usage of the label, so it’s worth doing additional research to ensure that the product is genuinely made in the USA.
Furthermore, some companies may use tricky wording and phrases to trick customers into thinking their products are made in the United States. For example, labels like “made in America” or “made in the USA with imported materials” do not mean the socks are made in the United States. Similarly, words like “designed” or “manufactured” may be used, but this signifies that only a part of the manufacturing process took place in the United States.
Other Tips
Here are some additional steps to help you find socks made in the USA.
Ignore American Flag Stickers or Symbols
Just because an American flag sticker is on the label does not mean the product is made in the USA.
Go On the Company’s Website
If a product is made in the USA, this is a huge selling point. So, you should be able to find this information online on the company’s website. Look specifically at the “About Us” section or the product page. On the other hand, if you can’t find any information regarding the country of origin, it’s better to assume that it’s made overseas. Companies are not required to label their products online, so silence speaks volumes in this case.
Make a Call
Kick it old school and call the company if you are still unsure where a pair of socks comes from. A customer service representative should be able to help answer your questions.
Socks Not Made in the USA
Here are some of the brands we’ve investigated that make socks that are not made in the USA. We’ll keep adding to this list over time.
