How to Find T-Shirts Made in the USA

T-shirts are versatile pieces of clothing that just about anyone can wear. You can find low-quality t-shirts very cheap, but if you want something that will last, you may consider looking for t-shirts made in the USA. While it is true that many t-shirt manufacturers have outsourced their production to other countries, there are still several companies that produce their shirts domestically.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re on the hunt for American-made t-shirts.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Before we dive into how to find t-shirts made in the USA, let’s define what that means. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), for a product to be labeled as “made in the USA,” it must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. This means that all major components and processing must occur within the country.

So, if a t-shirt is cut and sewn in the USA, but the fabric is sourced from China, it cannot be considered American-made.

Check our detailed “made in the USA” labeling guide for more information.

Materials

T-shirts can be made of various materials like 100% cotton, a cotton blend, or synthetics like polyester. When looking for an American-made t-shirt, paying attention to the materials and where they’re sourced from is essential. Ideally, you want a shirt that’s made entirely of domestic materials.

Cotton

Cotton is by far the most popular fabric used in t-shirts. While most of the world’s cotton is produced in countries like China and India, the United States is actually one of the leading producers of this natural fiber, coming in third.

According to the National Cotton Council, American cotton growers supply nearly 17% of the world’s cotton. And American cotton is considered some of the best in the world. So, if you’re looking for a quality cotton t-shirt, US-made is the way to go.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fiber often used in sportswear and performance apparel. It’s a popular choice for T-shirts because it’s strong, durable, and easy to care for.

While most polyester is produced in Asia, you can also find shirts made with domestic polyester. For example,  Eastman Chemical Company and William Barnet & Son are US companies that produce enough polyester to land them in the top 10 polyester-producing companies. So, while most polyester t-shirts are likely to be made overseas, it’s definitely possible to find US-made polyester.

Labeling

When looking for USA-made T-shirtas, it’s essential to pay attention to the labeling.

According to the Textile Products Identification Act, every textile product must be labeled with the country of origin and the fiber content. This includes t-shirts! So, if a t-shirt is made in the USA, it should say so on the label.

Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code also helps make it easier to find US-made products, as any imported products must be labeled as such.

So, you should look specifically for the “made in the USA” label, which is protected by the FTC.

Don’t be fooled by similar labels like:

  • Assembled in the USA
  • Made in America
  • Made in the USA with imported materials
  • Designed in the USA

Unfortunately, it’s worth mentioning that the FTC does not necessarily do the best job of policing the usage of the label. So, ultimately, it’s up to the consumers to research whether the t-shirt is actually made in the USA and report any fraudulent usage of the label.

Other Tips

In addition to researching the raw material and checking the label, there are a few other tips to help you find t-shirts made in the USA.

Check The Manufacturer’s Website

You can always check the manufacturer’s website if you’re unsure about a particular brand or seller. This is a great way to get more information about where the t-shirt is made and what materials are used.

Check the company’s “About Us” page or the product page on their website.

Unlike the labeling on the physical product, companies are not required to label the country of origin online, so if there is no mention of whether or not a t-shirt is made in the USA, likely, it’s not. If a t-shirt is genuinely made in the USA, The company will clearly advertise it as it’s a huge selling point.

Do A Google Search

A quick Google search can also tell a lot about a company or product. For example, try searching for “[brand] + made in the USA.” This should bring up any articles, blog posts, or reviews that mention the brand and whether or not its products are made in America.

Call The Company

If you can’t find any information online, your last resort is to call the company and ask them directly. They should be able to tell you definitively whether or not the t-shirt is made in the USA.

T-Shirt Brands Not Made in the USA

  • Hanes – based in NC, but imported

  • Earth Creations – all imported fabric
  • BELLA+CANVAS – sewing all done internationally
