Sofas Made in the USA

Sofas are a huge purchase, and a lot of the best materials going into them are coming from right here in the USA. Oftentimes, large retailers will cut corners and construct their couches with cheaper materials from overseas. We did the research to find the American companies that are making sofas using U.S. materials in U.S. factories. Below are our findings, complete with tons of details about each one, along with some tips for finding the country of origin.

Each sectional unit is sold individually, so your whole couch can be customized as you like it, and it has the added benefit of being able to fit through pretty much any doorway or stairwell. The frame for each section is made from solid oak, providing sturdy support (selling to customers straight from their factory and not going through a retailer allows them to invest more in the construction of their sofas). The sectionals are very easy to put together as well and don’t require any tools.

In terms of style variety, Simplicity Sofas offers over 300 fabric and leather variations. When you choose the sectionals you want, you can customize the fabric, foot style, cushion style, and cushion type, and select among a few different add-ons as well. Frank is excited about their trends in fabric sourcing: “One of the most encouraging trends in the furniture industry right now is the return of American fabric manufacturers. Ten years ago, almost all of the fabrics we used were imported. Today 75% of our customers are choosing American-made high performance fabrics.” Check out our full interview with Simplicity Sofas founder, Jeff Frank.

How To Find Sofas Made In The USA

Instead of just giving you a list of American made sofas, we want to help you learn how to do your own research and make better shopping choices. We’ll dive into the sofa industry, covering things like where materials come from, labeling, and tips for finding top-quality US made sofa brands. Let’s start by breaking down what “made in the USA” really means and how to understand it when shopping for sofas.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

First, what does it mean for something to be “made in the USA”? To use this label, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that “all or virtually all” of the product be made in the United States. This means that all significant parts and processing must occur in the United States.

For a sofa to be considered “made in the USA,” it must be made from raw materials sourced and processed in the United States. So, for example, if the sofa is made from wood sourced from Canada, but the rest of the sofa is made in the USA, it cannot be labeled as “made in the USA.”

Check out our detailed labeling guide for more information on the FTC’s “made in the USA” standards.

Materials

The first step in finding sofas made in the USA is to look at the materials used. The most common materials used in sofas are leather, wood, and upholstery fabrics. These materials are highly durable and can last many years with proper care.

Leather

There are two types of leather commonly used in sofas: full-grain and top-grain leather. Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather available and is made from the entire hide of the animal. In the USA, cattle are the most common source of leather for sofas. To ensure your sofa is made from domestic leather, look for a label that says the sofa is made from “100% American leather.” On the other hand, exotic leathers are more likely to be sourced overseas.

Wood

Several types of wood are in furniture manufacturing. The main types of wood are hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods, such as oak and maple, are more expensive but are also more durable. The USA also has one of the highest production of hardwood lumber in the world, falling just slightly behind China. This means there is an ample supply of American hardwoods to choose from. Make sure to ask about the type of wood used in your sofa before making a purchase.

Cotton

Cotton is a common material used in sofas, particularly in cushions. It is a natural fiber that is soft and breathable and grown in the southern United States. While the world’s largest producer of cotton is actually China, the United States remains one of the top five producers. In fact, cotton is a 21-billion industry in the USA, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a sofa made with American-grown cotton.

Labeling

When looking for a sofa made in the USA, it is essential to pay attention to labeling. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code states that all imported products must be labeled as such. This helps us weed out sofas that are made abroad. So, pay attention to the labeling when searching for sofas “made in the USA.”

Any wrong or misleading labeling of a product as “made in the USA” is prohibited by law and can result in penalties. Although FTC cannot pre-approve all products, it does investigate complaints of misleading labeling and take action when necessary.

You must also be careful with misleading language such as “assembled in the USA” or “designed in the USA.” These terms do not necessarily mean that the products are made in the United States. Similarly, phrases like “made in America” are used to trick consumers into thinking the product is made in the USA. However, America can also refer to Canada and Mexico.

Another thing to look out for is an American flag sticker. American flags on labels are not regulated, so just because you see an American flag does not mean the product is made in the USA. So, take it all with a grain of salt.

Other Tips

Here are a few other tips to keep in mind when looking for sofas made in the USA.

Check the Company’s Website

When shopping online, another good way to tell if a product is made in the United States is to check the company’s website. Specifically, you should check out its “About Us” page or the product page. If the sofa is truly made in the United States, this fact should be loudly and proudly advertised as it’s a huge selling point.

It is worth noting that companies are not required to label their products with the country of origin on their websites or marketing materials. So, if you can’t find the country of origin, it’s likely that the product is made abroad.

Check Social Media Handles

Social media can also be a helpful way to learn about a company’s manufacturing process. Many companies will post about their products and include information on where they are made. You can also contact the company directly through social media with any questions.

Ask The Company

If you’re still unsure about a product, don’t hesitate to call the company for more information. A representative should be able to tell you where the product is made and whether or not it is American-made.

Sofas Not Made in the USA

When doing our research we came across popular sofa brands that are not making their sofas in the USA. We’ve included a full list below including more information on where they’re being manufactured. We’ll keep updating this list as we find out more information.
