How to Find Pajamas Made in the USA

Determining what country a pair of PJs came from can be challenging, especially if you are online shopping and don’t have a physical tag to examine. Below we will give you some of the best methods we’ve discovered for finding American made pajamas.

For more detailed information on shopping for USA-made goods, check out our made in the USA labeling explainer.

Materials

The materials a pair of jammies are made from can go a long way toward helping you find out if they were made in the USA and if they will be a good option for you.

Cotton

Cotton is commonly used in pajamas because it is lightweight and comfortable. This natural, breathable fabric keeps you cool during the summer and warm during the winter. It is also easy to care for.

Fortunately, the United States is a key cotton producer on the global stage, along with China and India. This means you shouldn’t have much trouble finding a pair of cotton PJs made in the USA.

Wool

Wool is another popular option for pajamas because it regulates body temperature. The best quality wool for sleepwear comes from Merino sheep because of its softness. These days most Merino wool comes from Australia, but some is produced in the United States. So, if you do some research, you can find wool jammies made here.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a trendy fabric, especially for sensitive skin, because it is soft and non-irritating. It’s a good choice for sleepwear due to its body temperature regulating and anti-microbial properties.

Although bamboo is commonly associated with China, this plant is also grown in the United States for domestic use.

Silk

Silk is a natural choice for those who want a touch of luxury in their sleepwear. This fabric is soft, hypoallergenic, and looks beautiful. However, the United States isn’t big on silk production. Instead, the USA imports most of it from overseas. The biggest silk-producing countries are China, India, and Uzbekistan. We’re not saying it’s impossible to find domestically-sourced silk pajamas, but it may take you a while.

Labeling

The federal government has some laws and regulations making it easier for consumers to find USA-made products. For example, Title 19, Chapter 4, Section 1304 of the U.S. Code says the labels of all products shipped from overseas must include their country of origin. However, this only applies to the physical product found in stores. Manufacturers are not required to provide information online on where items were made.

If you aren’t sure where a product comes from, I recommend sending an e-mail to the company or giving them a call. Be sure to ask where the item was manufactured and where the materials are sourced from.

Final Tips

Here are some additional tips for finding USA-made pajamas and other products.

First, you should be aware that the U.S. government doesn’t protect the image of the American flag. This means if you see Old Glory on a product or its label, or in advertising, there’s no guarantee the item was manufactured here.

Also, when shopping for made in the USA products, look for close-but-not-quite language like “assembled in the USA” or “stitched in the USA.” These phrases often mean at least some of the materials were sourced from overseas.
