How to Find Makeup & Cosmetics Made in the USA

Many American consumers are now opting to purchase products made in the USA. This is to support the American economy and ensure that their products are high quality, safe, and adhere to the strictest environmental standards.

It can be tricky to find what you need if you’re looking for makeup cosmetics made in the USA. So here are a few tips on how to find the perfect US-made makeup cosmetics for you.

What Does “Made In The USA” Mean?

First, it’s important to understand what “made in the USA” really means. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), it means the product is “all or virtually all” made in the USA. Therefore, only a negligible amount of the product components can be imported from outside sources. For makeup, this includes the packaging, formulas, and ingredients.

To learn more about FTC’s “made in the USA” guidelines, check out this detailed labeling guide.

Materials

Most makeup uses a combination of synthetic and natural components. It’s important to know where these materials come from to ensure they meet the FTC’s “made in the USA” requirements. Common ingredients used in makeup include pigments, waxes, oils, preservatives, thickeners, and fragrances.

Certain ingredients should be on your radar when looking for American made makeup and cosmetics. Here are a few important materials to look for.

Mica

Mica is a natural mineral that gives makeup products a shimmery finish. China is the major supplier of mica, but the USA also has mica deposits mined and processed within the country.

In fact, with 47,000 tons of production, the USA is the 3rd largest producer of mica in the world. Make sure to look for domestically sourced mica products as it is ethically mined with labor laws in place, unlike some other major producers.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a popular ingredient used in many lip balms and foundations. India dominates the global beeswax market. Still, the USA produces some of the material, though definitely not to the extent some other countries do. The USA ranks as the tenth largest producer of beeswax. So, since the US beeswax market is significantly smaller, it’s worth double-checking the country of origin regarding beeswax in your makeup cosmetics.

Packaging Materials

Packaging materials are also an important factor to consider when looking for makeup cosmetics made in the USA. Glass, aluminum, and plastic are some of the most common packaging materials for makeup. All of these products can certainly be made in the USA, but keep in mind that you’re more likely to find glass and plastic made in the USA than aluminum.

Labeling

Labeling is also an essential factor in determining whether the makeup is made in the USA or not. According to Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code, companies must accurately represent the country of origin regarding foreign-made products. This is a massive help in helping consumers weed out products made abroad. When looking for US-made products, you should look specifically for the label “made in the USA.”

Although theoretically, it should be as simple as finding the FTC-protected “made in the USA” label, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, there is no pre-approval process for the “made in the USA” label, so it’s up to the companies to determine whether their products meet the criteria to be able to use the label. And ultimately, it’s up to the consumers to report any false usage of the label.

You should also beware of misleading language on labels, like “manufactured/designed in the USA.” This label does not necessarily mean the entire product is made in the USA. Another example is “made in the USA with imported materials, ” meaning the product is not truly made in the USA as it does not use domestic raw materials. Another popular label is “made in America,” but America can refer to either Mexico or Canada.

The American flag on the label or packaging is a final thing to watch out for. The usage of the flag on labels is not regulated, so just because you see the flag does not automatically mean the product is made in the USA.

Other Tips

Apart from this, there are a few other tips to help you search for makeup cosmetics made in the USA.

Check the Company’s Website

Look for the company’s website and see if they provide information regarding where their product is made. Check the website’s About Us page or the product page. If the product is truly “made in the USA,” you should see this fact advertised on their website as it is a huge selling point.

On the other hand, if the product is made abroad, you might not find any information regarding the country of origin. This is because companies are not required to state the country of origin in their online or promotional materials.

Check Social Media

Social media can provide a wealth of information about a company. So check the company’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages. Companies will often post updates about the sourcing and manufacturing process of their makeup products, so definitely keep an eye out for this.

Call The Company

If you’re still unsure where the product is made, simply call the company and ask. A representative should be able to answer all of your questions!
