How To Find Beard Care Products Made in the USA

In recent years, there has been a growing trend among American men to grow their facial hair. Beards are seen as stylish and masculine, and many men are eager to get in on the trend. However, simply growing the hair out without grooming is not enough to have a well-kept beard.

Beard oil is a popular product to keep hair follicles healthy and sleek. There are countless beard care products that you can find online or even at supermarkets, but you want to be certain the product you use is good quality and safe. American-made beard care products are generally the way to go in this regard.

Fortunately, it is relatively easy to find American-made beard care products. A number of US-based companies specialize in producing these products, and they can be found both online and in brick-and-mortar stores.

Here are a few tips on how to find beard care products made in the USA.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

When a product is labeled as “made in the USA,” it means all or almost all of the components and labor involved in making the product are from the United States. For a product to be able to use this label, at least 95% of its components must be American-made.

The “made in the USA” label is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), but it’s worth noting that they don’t do the best job of policing the usage of this label. So, it’s best to do additional research to ensure the product is genuinely made in the USA, which we’ll dig into below.

For more information on the FTC’s “Made in the USA” standards, check out our detailed guide on all things made in the USA.

Beard care products can be made from various materials, some of which are often sourced from outside the United States. When sourcing materials, it is vital to check where the company sources its ingredients.

Some common ingredients in beard care products include carrier oils and essential oils.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and can be made from various plants. Common carrier oils in beard care products include jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and argan oil.

Almost 40% of the jojoba oil in the world comes from Israel. But the jojoba tree is also native to the southwestern US, so it’s definitely possible to find US-made jojoba oil. You’ll just need to double-check the country of origin.

Regarding almond oil, the USA is the world’s largest producer of this material, producing 2 million tons of this oil each year. So, you definitely can count on beard care products made from almond oil to be produced on US soil.

And finally, argan oil is only produced commercially in Africa and some parts of the Middle East due to climatic restraints.

So, the best chance of finding a made-in-the-USA carrier oil is to look for products that use almond oil, which is most likely to be produced domestically. However, you should also be able to find jojoba oil made in the USA as well.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from plants. They are commonly used in beard care products for their scent and therapeutic properties. Some common essential oils used in beard care products include lavender oil, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil.

Lavender oil is typically sourced from France and Bulgaria. The USA is starting to build a lavender industry domestically, but it does not even compete with other lavender-producing countries.

Tea tree oil is usually sourced from Australia, but it can also be sourced from China and some African countries. Tea tree oil is not produced in the USA.

That being said, the USA is one of the world’s leading producers of peppermint oil. In fact, about 50% of the entire world’s peppermint oil supply is produced in the United States. So, when you’re looking for essential oils in your beard care products, peppermint oil is a great option. Otherwise, American-grown lavender can also be found, though you will definitely need to double-check the country of origin before purchasing.

Labeling is another essential thing to look at when looking for beard care products made in the United States. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code states that all imported products must be labeled with the country of origin. So, when looking for American-made, you should specifically look for the FTC-protected label “made in the USA.”

However, things are more complex than simply looking for the “made in the USA” label. It’s worth keeping in mind that there is no pre-approval process to use the label. Additionally, many companies often use misleading labels using tricky language to imply a product is made in the USA when it’s not.

Here are similar common misleading labels and what they really mean:

Assembled in the USA: The product was put together in the USA with imported parts.

Made in the USA with imported materials: Similar to the above. The product is put together in the USA with non-US materials.

Designed in the USA: The company is likely based in the USA, but the materials and manufacturing take place abroad.

A final thing to watch out for is the usage of the American flag sticker on labels. Just because you see one does not necessarily mean the product is made in the USA.

Other Tips

Here are some more tips for finding beard care products that are actually made in the USA:

Check The Company Website

“Made in the USA” is a huge selling point, so if this is the case, you’ll usually find it loudly advertised on the company’s website. You can generally find this information in the “About Us” or “Our Story” section. Alternatively, you could check the product page.

On the other hand, if the product is made abroad, likely, you won’t find any information about the country of origin on the website. This is because companies are not required to state the country of origin of their products on any online or promotional materials.

Check Their Social Media

Social media is a great way to see what companies say about their products. For example, if a company is proud of its US-made beard care products, it’ll likely mention it on its social media platforms.

Contact the Company Directly

If you’re still unsure about a product, the best thing to do is contact the company directly. They should be able to tell you definitively whether or not their product is made in the USA.

Beard Care Products Not Made in the USA

We’re really pleased to see that there are so many beard care products being made in the USA with many of them using USA-sourced ingredients too. There were a couple of popular brands we came across in our research that doesn’t make their products in the USA. We’ve listed these below to help you make an informed decision.

  • Proraso – Made in Italy.
  • Acqua Di Parma – Made in Italy.
  • Murdock – Made in England.
  • Seven Potions – Made in England.
