Factors To Consider

Source of Ingredients

The source of the ingredients is often the #1 thing to look for in a safe vitamin or supplement. Ingredients from China are often very unreliable. Additionally, avoid any vitamins that had both calcium and iron in them, which can clash when they are taken together, affecting the ability for both of them to get absorbed properly.

Also look for vitamins that have activated forms of nutrients (like P5P mentioned above), which helps speed up the effectiveness of that nutrient, essentially bypassing the activation process that your body would have to perform. When in doubt, call the brand if you ever have doubts about where ingredients come from.

Synthetic Fillers

Fillers can sneak up on you don’t look at the ingredients list carefully (luckily, we did that for you). They are often used to extend the product’s shelf life, make it look or taste better, or make it cheaper to manufacture. These fillers can come in the form of synthetic colors, artificial preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, corn, soy, wheat, and many other forms.

Other Safety Measures

Ingredients and fillers are a big part of safety, but take extra precautions and look at supplement strength, packaging, and storage. In terms of strength and size, here are some of the common terms you see on vitamin packages and what they mean:

  • RDA – recommended dietary allowance
  • AI – adequate intake
  • UL – tolerable upper intake level
  • DV – daily value

Also look for bottles that have kids’ safety locks on them and can be stored safely in your cabinet or pantry without being refrigerated.

Easy to Take

Your daily vitamins should be easy to swallow and, ideally, not leave a bad aftertaste (although that isn’t a deal breaker for us if the vitamin has the best nutritional value).

A lot of companies throw fancy ingredient names at you and jack up the price of their supplements. Make sure you get the best vitamins for your money, so eliminate any vitamins where the quality of the product doesn’t match the price tag.
