How To Find Vitamins Made in the USA
You should only buy the best when putting anything in or on your body. One way to ensure you are buying quality vitamins that are made of safe ingredients is to buy products that are made in the USA with US products. However, with production for most products taking place abroad, it can be hard to find a true American product.
Here are a few ways to help you find US-made vitamins.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
To look for vitamins made in the USA, you first need to know what it means for a product to be “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), for a product to be labeled “made in the USA,” “all or virtually all” of the product, including the sourcing of the materials to the manufacturing of the product, must take place in the United States.
To learn more about the FTC’s guidelines, check out our “made in the USA” guide.
Ingredients
The first thing to look for when searching for US-made vitamins is the ingredients used in the product. US-made vitamins should use ingredients that are sourced domestically. Some common vitamin ingredients include vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and iron.
To find US-made vitamins, it is essential to research the ingredients used in the product to ensure the product you are consuming is genuinely US-made. As there are both domestic and international vitamin producers, make sure you research the company and the product itself to ensure you are purchasing a US-made product.
Packaging
For vitamins to be considered “made in the USA,” the packaging that the vitamins come in must also be sourced and manufactured in the USA. Common packaging materials include plastic and glass. China is the top producer of both of these materials, so you are more likely to find foreign-made packaging for vitamins. But with that said, the USA has a sizeable plastic industry, producing around 20% of the world’s supply of plastic, and the United States glass industry is not insignificant.
However, with the sheer size of production abroad for both materials, you’ll definitely want to double-check the country of origin before purchasing. With a bit of research and due diligence, you can ensure that the packaging, whether it is made of plastic or glass, is also made in the USA.
Labeling
When looking for vitamins made in the USA, you must pay special attention to the labeling. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code says that all imported products must be labeled as such. This law is a huge help in weeding out foreign-made products. When looking for American-made vitamins, you should instead look specifically for the FTC-protected “made in the USA” label. But, keep in mind that while the “made in the USA” label is protected, the FTC does not do the best job of policing it.
There is no pre-approval process for the label, so it’s up to the companies to determine whether or not their products meet the criteria to be able to use the label. And in the end, it’s up to consumers like you to report any false or misleading usage of the label.
Also, watch out for misleading labels that may seem synonymous with the “made in the USA” label. Labels such as “designed in the USA,” “assembled in the USA,” or “made in the USA with imported products” do not mean that the product is truly and fully made in the USA. Another label that may seem synonymous with “made in the USA” is “made in America,” but in reality, “America” can also refer to Mexico or Canada.
Lastly, look out for the use of the American flag sticker on labels. American flag stickers on products are not regulated, so it does not mean the product is made in the USA.
Other Tips
Here are some more tips to help you find vitamins that are made in the USA:
Check the Manufacturer’s Website
The “About Us” page of the website should have a lot of information about the origin of the vitamins. “Made in the USA” is a huge selling point, so you should see it on the manufacturer’s website if this is the case. But keep in mind that companies are not required to state the country of origin of their products on their online or promotional materials. So, you may not see the country of origin on their website at all. If this is the case, it’s better to err on the side of caution and assume the product is made abroad.
Check Social Media
Have a browse through the company’s social media handles, as the company may have posted about the manufacturing process of their vitamins in the past. You may be able to find photos or information regarding where the vitamins come from and where they are packaged.
Call the Company
If you are still unsure of where the vitamins are made, the best thing you can do is to call the manufacturer directly. A representative should be able to answer all questions you have about the vitamins.
