How to Find Dog Collars, Leashes, and Harnesses Made in the USA

Instead of just listing out every American-made dog walking supplies brand, we’re here to arm you with the know-how to dig in and shop smarter. Take a peek behind the scenes of the dog walking gear manufacturing scene – from sourcing materials to decoding labels, and savvy strategies for snagging top-notch brands made in the USA. Let’s start by digging into the language of “made in the USA” and how to make sense of it.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) protects the “made in the USA” label and requires it to be used only if the components of the product are “all or virtually all” made in the USA. In other words, both the sourcing of the raw material and the manufacturing of the product must take place in the United States. Unfortunately, the phrase “virtually all” can be a gray area, so it’s worth doing additional research to ensure that the product is truly made in the USA.

To learn more about this, check out our full “made in the USA” guide.

Materials

The first step in finding dog collars, leashes, and harnesses made in the USA is to look at the materials. Researching the materials used and whether or not these materials are made in the USA can be a significant indicator when finding US-made products. The most popular materials used in dog gear are leather, nylon, and metal.

Leather

Leather dog collars, leashes, and harnesses can be expensive. But leather is comfortable and stylish, making it a popular choice for dog owners who want to pamper their furry friends. With that said, leather doesn’t do very well when it comes to contact with moisture, so you should ensure that the leather you purchase is good quality. Otherwise, it will not stand up well to wear and tear.

Leather quality varies immensely. If you want the best, you should look for full-grain leather made from cowhide. This type of leather will be the most durable. Unfortunately, full-grain cowhide leather can be expensive, so the next step down from that would be top-grain leather, which is still good quality.

Avoid anything that says “genuine leather.” Genuine leather is an umbrella term for anything that is technically leather and may not even be cowhide.

China is the world’s largest leather producer, but the United States still holds substantial ground in the leather industry. Plus, leather made in the US tends to be of better quality, especially if you’re looking for full-grain or top-grain leather. To help you find US-made leather, look out for the label: “100% American leather.”

Nylon

Nylon collars, leashes, and harnesses are the most common among dog owners as they are stylish and durable. They are also soft and comfortable, so dogs won’t feel irritated wearing them.

As with most other materials, nylon is mostly produced in China. But the USA is on the map for nylon production as well, falling not too far behind the manufacturing giant that is China. The USA ranks fourth in nylon production worldwide, producing around 2.4 million tons of nylon annually. So, when looking for nylon dog gear, double-check the country of origin to make sure it is from the USA

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a popular choice for dog owners looking for a leash that will withstand harsh wear and tear and corrosion. Stainless steel should not be used for collars or harnesses as the material is much too harsh to be put directly on the dogs’ necks and bodies.

China leads the pack in steel manufacturing, producing more than half of the world’s steel. However, the USA still produces some of this material, too – coming in fifth. The reason to choose American-made steel instead of Chinese-made steel comes down to quality. Steel made in the USA is three times stronger than steel imported from China. So, for quality stainless steel, US-made is the way to go.

Labeling

The second step to finding dog gear made in the USA is to look at the label. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code states that all imported products must be labeled with the country of origin. This is a huge help in finding US-made products, but it is not as straightforward as it may seem. You should look specifically for the FTC-protected “made in the USA” label to find US-made dog collars and leashes.

Unfortunately, the FTC does not generally do the best job in policing the usage of the “made in the USA” label. As there is no pre-approval process, it is up to the companies to determine whether or not their products meet the requirements to use the “made in the USA” label. And eventually, it’s up to the consumers to report any products that falsely use this label.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you should take care in looking out for the words used in the labels. For example, companies may label their products, using similar phrases like:

  • Made in America
  • Manufactured in the USA
  • Designed in the USA
  • Made in the USA with imported products

None of the above labels actually signify that the product is truly made in the USA.

Other Tips

Here are a few other tips to keep in mind when looking for dog leashes, harnesses, and collars made in the USA.

Check Out The Company’s Website

This tip is particularly helpful when you are shopping online. Check the company’s website for product information. In particular, check out the product page or the company’s “About Us” page. If their products are made in the USA, this is a huge selling point, so it would be loudly advertised.

On the other hand, if you can’t find any information about the country of origin on the company’s website. Assume that it is made elsewhere. Companies are not required to label the product’s country of origin when it comes to their online or marketing materials, so the silence speaks volumes.

Call The Company

If you still aren’t sure whether or not a particular dog collar, leash, or harness is made in the USA, just call the company. A representative should be able to answer your questions.
