How to Find Cat Collars Made in the USA

Since your cat will be wearing a collar every day, you naturally want the best quality. A collar made of flimsy materials with poor construction might not last very long. Shopping specifically for made in the USA collars is a good way to ensure you are getting the best product for your kitty.

Unfortunately, many brands today manufacture their goods overseas to cut costs, making it a challenge for consumers to find domestic products. So, here is a detailed guide on locating American made cat collars.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Let’s start with the good news. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says the “made in the USA” label can only be used on products that are “all or virtually all” made in the United States. This means the items must be manufactured here from domestic materials. But it’s up to companies to interpret the meaning of “virtually all,” which can lead to some issues. That’s why we recommend doing your own research to make sure you are getting items that are entirely, or at least almost entirely, made in the USA.

For more information, read our full “made in the USA” guide.

Now let’s get into material sourcing for the cat collar industry.

Materials

A key factor when looking for made in the USA products is the raw materials and where they are sourced from. Therefore, we broke down the most common materials used to make cat collars and researched their countries of origin.

Nylon

Nylon is the most popular material used for cat collars and for good reason. These collars last a long time, and they are comfy enough for even the most sensitive kitties.

China is the world’s leading producer of nylon, but the United States isn’t far behind in fourth place. In fact, the US is responsible for nearly 2.4 million tons of nylon production annually. This means you should be able to find some brands that make cat collars right here in the USA.

Leather

If you don’t mind spending extra money for your fur baby to be stylish, leather is a good choice. This material is also comfortable. But not all leather is high-quality, so you need to do some thorough research before making a purchase.

Your best bet is to look for collars made from full-grain cowhide leather, which is the sturdiest kind on the market. However, if full-grain leather is beyond your budget, a good second choice is top-grain leather.

Watch out for the phrase “genuine leather” because this term is used for any kind of leather, not just cowhide.

As with so many raw materials, China leads the globe in leather production. Fortunately, the US still has a presence in the leather market. Buying domestic leather not only supports American jobs, but ensures you are getting top quality. Be on the lookout for the “100% American leather” label, and check to make sure the collar you are purchasing is made from either full-grain or top-grain leather.

Labeling

Next, consider the labeling. The federal government is on our side here. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code requires foreign products to have their country of origin on their label. However, this isn’t entirely foolproof, so we recommend looking for the “made in the USA” label because it is protected by the FTC. But you should also be aware that brands don’t have to go through a pre-approval process to use this label, and the FTC doesn’t go out of its way to police them. Instead, it relies on consumers to report false labeling.

You also need to be on the lookout for misleading phrases some brands put on their labels to try to trick shoppers into thinking their products were entirely made in the USA. Here are some common examples:

  • Made in America (the product could be from Mexico or China)
  • Manufactured in the USA (raw materials may be imported)
  • Designed in the USA (the product was probably made overseas)
  • Made in the USA with imported products (we appreciate the transparency, at least)

Other Tips

Here are some final tips for finding cat collars made in the USA.

Check Out The Company’s Website

If you are shopping online, you are probably visiting the company’s website anyway. We recommend looking at the “About Us” page or product pages. Brands that make their goods in the USA know it’s a popular selling point, so they are likely to emphasize it in these locations. If you don’t see anything indicating a product’s country of origin, it’s best to assume the item is imported.

Call The Company

Still in doubt about where a cat collar came from? Just call the company. A representative should be able to find the info you want.
