How to Find Lighting Made in the USA

Shopping for lighting is complicated due to the limitless range of options. Just like any other product, you want the best you can afford. That’s why it makes sense to look specifically for lighting that’s made in the USA and compare prices to see what makes the most sense for your budget. So how do you find lighting that’s made here? Let’s get into it.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Any product that’s advertised as being “made in the USA” must be “all or virtually all” made here from domestically sourced parts, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This means the product can only contain a minimal amount of overseas material in it.

If you want lighting that’s all or nearly all made in the USA, look at what a product is made from and its labeling. More detailed information on this is available in our  “made in the USA” guide.

Materials

Lighting can be made from all kinds of materials, but only some are easily sourced domestically. To make things easier for you, here’s a list of the most common lighting materials and below and their likely countries of origin.

Solid Wood

One of your best bets for finding lighting products that are made here is to look for ones crafted from solid hardwood. This is because the U.S. is the world’s top producer of oak, walnut, maple, and cherry lumber. This type of wood is so durable that products made from it can last for generations.

Fiberboard

Although light fixtures, lamps, and other products produced with fiberboard can be easier on your pocketbook initially, they won’t last as long as those made from solid wood.

The United States was the first country to manufacture fiberboard. Production has spread to other countries, but you can still find domestically-made fiberboard products.

Steel

Some lighting fixtures are made from steel. China, which makes 50% of this metal, is the global leader in steel production. Although the United States is only fourth among steel-producing countries, it ranks high in quality. In fact, US steel is three times stronger than steel from China.

Iron

Iron is a fairly common material for lighting fixtures. The good news is the U.S. produces nearly 50 million metric tons of iron ore making it the third highest-value metal produced here. The not-so-good news is most iron in the United States comes from scraps that originated in other countries, such as China and Japan. In fact, the U.S. ranks only 9th in global iron ore production.

Copper

The United States ranks fifth worldwide in copper production behind Chile, Peru, China, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This means you can find copper lighting products that are made in the USA if you do a little digging.

Brass

This copper and zinc alloy adds a touch of luxury to any lighting fixture. Germany, China, and Japan are the global leaders in the production of this metal, but some of it is also manufactured domestically.

Glass

If you have your heart set on made-in-the-USA glass lighting fixtures, you have a lot of work ahead of you. China makes almost a quarter of the world’s glass, while the U.S. only produces 6.5%. Fortunately, some hand-blown glass production takes place domestically.

Labeling

As we mentioned earlier, labels are an important way to discover any product’s country of origin. This is because manufacturers are required to include this information on labels, and the FTC protects the use of the “made in the USA” label.

However, don’t be misled by almost-but-not-quite language such as “assembled in the USA” or “designed in the USA.” Some brands use these phrases to hide the fact that some production took place overseas.

You should also proceed with caution if you see labels that say “made in America” because it could mean the item was produced in Mexico and Canada, which are also part of North America.

In addition, don’t assume a product was made in the USA just because you see the image of Old Glory on the label. The image of the American flag is not protected, so brands sometimes use it even if an item was made outside the USA.

Another red flag could be using the American flag on the label. Unlike the phrase “made in the USA,” the image of the Stars and Stripes is not protected. This means its presence is NOT a guarantee a product was made here.

Finally, remember when we said the FTC protects the “made in the USA” label? Sounds great, right? Sadly, there’s no pre-approval process manufacturers must go through to receive that label. This means companies policing themselves as to whether their products meet the “made in the USA” standard. So, once again, be prepared to do your own research.

Additional Tips

Check the Company Website

Brands that do make items in the USA often make that a key part of their marketing. This means they will have that information prominently displayed on their website. But keep in mind that companies are not required to include the country of origin for their products when advertising online or in print. Fortunately, some manufacturers are upfront about indicating on their website if a certain item is imported. If they don’t even list that, you are probably better off assuming the product wasn’t produced here.

Look Beyond the Official Website

If you are confused about where a product really comes from, do an online search for news articles, or press releases that might reveal the country of origin. Other possible sources are message boards and social media.

Call the Company

Sometimes the easiest way to find out if an item was made in the USA is to call the company directly, particularly if it’s a small one. Be sure to not only ask where their lighting is manufactured, but also where the materials come from.
