How to Find Gloves Made in the USA

Gloves can be worn in many different scenarios: for comfort, style, or protection. But, it can be difficult to find high-quality gloves made in the United States.

This guide will help you find great gloves made in the USA for you by compiling research about where the materials for gloves are most likely to be sourced from, as well as giving a general overview of some of the laws and requirements that companies are obligated to follow to protect consumers from false “made in the USA” claims.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Guidelines put in place by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) help protect against false claims made by companies about their products being “made in the USA.”

For a company to claim that their products are “all or virtually all” produced in the United States, they must be able to prove that the materials for those products were assembled in the USA and that the majority of manufacturing costs came from the USA.

To get more information on what the label “made in the USA” means, check out our complete guide on how to find made-in-the-USA products.

Gloves can be made from several different materials, depending on their intended use. Some materials make the gloves more durable, while others are used to make the gloves more temperature-resistant.

Leather gloves protect the user against cuts and scrapes from sharp objects and are very fashionable as well, making them a popular choice when it comes to gloves.

China produces a significant percentage of the world’s leather production at 25%. However, there is a substantial leather industry in the United States as well. Leather in the USA tends to be of higher quality, especially if you source full-grain or top-grain leather. Good quality leather can also be found in countries like Italy, so research where the material was sourced if you are after a pair of leather gloves made in the USA.

Wool gloves are a great option when searching for protection from cold weather. Wool naturally repels water and is also a very breathable material.

The country with the highest production of wool is Australia. The United States ranks third in wool production, producing 17% of the total wool in the world. Because the United States produces a substantial amount of this material, finding wool gloves made in the USA should not be too difficult.

Nylon gloves are lightweight and good for protecting the user against contamination. These gloves are often used in laboratory and kitchen settings.

China is the number one producer of nylon in the world. The production of this material in the United States is estimated at around 2.4 million tons per year. While the USA might not be the top producer, they still produce a substantial amount of nylon.

Gloves made of canvas are often used for outdoor work such as gardening and construction.
Canvas is made from cotton, and the country that produces the most cotton in the world is China. The United States ranks third in the world’s cotton production, so finding gloves made from this material shouldn’t be too hard. However, it is always best to check with the manufacturer to ensure that the materials used are produced in the USA.

Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code states that the FTC’s job is to create rules and regulations that help protect consumers from false “made in the USA” claims. The FTC has a set of regulations that companies are obligated to follow, but unfortunately, they do not keep a close watch over the claims made. This means it falls on the customers to watch out for false “made in the USA” claims and call companies out. The FTC Act of 1914 allows American customers to take legal action against companies that falsely promote and label their products.

In terms of labeling, words matter. Make sure to watch out for verbiage that may be used in product labels. An example is “made” versus “assembled” in the USA. When the verb “assembled” is used, it signifies that the product was not made in the USA but instead shipped over and merely assembled here. The label “made in America” is also something to watch out for, as it can mean that the product was made in either the USA, Canada, or Mexico.

Companies use many tactics to initially mislead customers into believing that their product is made in the United States. It is important to thoroughly check the manufacturer’s website and look for pictures of the production site or other clues suggesting where the materials are produced.

However, when perusing the company’s website, look at everything with a critical eye. If a company does not explicitly state that its product is “made in the USA,” it will likely be made elsewhere.

In this case, companies are not required to label their products on any online promotional materials, so the silence speaks volumes.

Other Tips

Here are our final tips to keep in mind when looking for American made gloves.

Don’t Be Fooled By Stickers

An American flag sticker is often seen as a simple way to identify when a product was made in the United States. However, this flag can often mislead customers. The sticker is not government-regulated, which leads companies to use it to deceive customers.

Call the Company

This is a very simple and easy solution. If, after research, you still aren’t sure where a particular product is made, call the company. Their customer service team should be able to help answer your question about where a certain product is sourced and assembled.

Gloves Not Made in the USA

Here are some popular glove brands that we came across during our research that are not made in the USA. We’ll continue updating this list as we find more.
