Where Are Amana Appliances Made?

In 1934, a man began a business selling beverage coolers in Amana, Iowa. The following success spurred the new brand, now named after its town, to expand its products and production volume. Amana Heating & Air Conditioning was born.

In 1949, Amana was the first to introduce the side-by-side refrigerator. Aside from food and beverage cooling systems, the company began building other appliances like gas furnaces, microwaves, and air conditioners.

In 2014, Amana was acquired by Daikin Industries, LTD. Daikin is a Japanese appliance corporation that produces the most air conditioners in the world. However, Amana’s parent brand is Whirlpool Corporation, which also owns Maytag and KitchenAid.

As a brand owned partly by a Japanese corporation and with roots in the United States, we’d like to know one thing: where is it made? We looked into the Amana company and found out exactly that.

Verdict: Are Amana Appliances Made in the USA?

Yes. Amana manufactures its appliances in the United States. However, like the rest of the large appliance industry, it sources many raw materials for its appliances from overseas.

After Amana’s acquisition by Daikin in 2014, their Made in America fate was sealed. The buyout stipulated that production would take place within the US. Although an interesting move by a Japanese parent company, this was good news for both parties, as it is a solid selling point among American consumers.

Throughout their website and product manuals, Amana is very clear about the origin of their appliances. They seem proud of their American heritage and continuation of US-based manufacturing.

Amana cut the ribbon on a 4.2 million square foot manufacturing facility outside Houston, Texas, in 2016. Here, they manufacture, engineer, and assemble their products. The site also houses logistics and customer support.

The company used to own a manufacturing plant in Amana, Iowa, the birthplace of Amana Appliances. However, parent Whirlpool decided to sell in 2020 for a price of $92.6 million. Although the sale went through, the Amana brand continues to operate out of the facility with a lease-back arrangement. The sale was likely initiated by the tumultuous business environment of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whirlpool highlights its Amana-based factory through articles featuring interviews with local employees and video tours available on YouTube.

Among its sibling brands, Amana is marketed as an affordable option. That isn’t always the case with American made goods. Yet, our investigation shows that Amana products are indeed made here in the US.

And another one:

If Amana Appliances are on your list for potential buys, you can shop with peace of mind, knowing that all products are manufactured in Iowa or Texas.
