How To Find Bar Stools Made in the USA

Maybe you manage a bar and want to purchase good quality furniture or just want some nice stools for your kitchen. Bar stools are integral to any bar or restaurant but can also be used in a home setting. If you are looking for good quality bar stools that will last a while, you should look for bar stools made in the USA.

Regardless of the reason, it can be tricky to track down well-made bar stools that are made in the USA. So, If you are looking for American made bar stools, here are a few tips to help you find them.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Before we dive into the tips and tricks to finding bar stools made in the USA, let’s define what “made in the USA” means. To be considered made in the USA, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) states that the product must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. In other words, all major components and significant processing must take place domestically.

Check out our detailed labeling guide for more information on the FTC’s “made in the USA” standards.

Materials

Researching the products’ materials can be a good starting point when searching for American-made products. The most common materials used in bar stools are wood and metal, and the cover is usually leather or fabric.

Here is a quick breakdown of where these materials are typically sourced from.

Wood

Bar stools can be made from a variety of different woods. The most common type of wood used in bar stools is oak. Other popular woods include maple, cherry, and bamboo.

Hardwood is a great material for bar stools because it is durable and easy to clean. The USA is also home to some of the best hardwood forests in the world. In fact, the United States is one of the leading suppliers of hardwoods, falling slightly behind China.

So, if you are looking for bar stools made from hardwood, it is pretty easy to find one made of US wood. But still, make sure to ask the seller where the wood is sourced from before making a purchase.

Metal

Bar stools can also be made from metal. The most common type of metal used in bar stools is steel. Steel is popular because it is strong and easy to shape. The USA is one of the leading steel producers in the world, ranking fourth in the world behind China, Japan, and India.

American steel is far better quality than that of other countries. As a matter of fact, US-made steel is three times stronger than cheaper Chinese-made steel, so if you’re looking for quality, you should double-check the country of origin.

Leather

No bar stool is complete without its cover. Leather is an excellent choice for a top-quality bar stool seat. However, since the quality of leather varies immensely, it’s vital to ensure you get the best. Specifically, you should look for full-grain cowhide leather. If that’s a bit out of your budget, look for top-grain. Conversely, you should avoid “genuine leather” at all costs.

The world’s largest leather producer is China, but the USA holds its own against this manufacturing giant. You won’t usually find more exotic leathers made in the USA, but cowhide can be easily sourced domestically.

Fabric

Cotton and polyester are two fabrics often used for bar stool covers. Both materials can be sourced from the USA as they are both sizeable industries. Although both cotton and polyester are mainly produced in Asia, the USA still produces a significant amount of both and has some famous names in the industries. Just be sure to double-check the country of origin.

Labeling

The next step to finding bar stools made in the USA is to check the labeling. Two pieces of legislation help us with this. First is the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act regarding fabric bar stool covers. This act states that businesses must declare the percentage of the different types of fibers used in their textile goods and the country of origin. The second piece of legislation is the US Code Title 19, Chapter 4, Section 1304, which states that items must be labeled with their country of origin.

So, while searching for US-made bar stools, pay close attention and look specifically for the “made in the USA” label. The “made in the USA” label is protected by the FTC. But keep in mind that there is no pre-approval procedure. So, it is up to the businesses to decide if their goods fit the criteria. And in the end, it is up to consumers to notify the FTC of any erroneous label use.

Watch out for tricky terms and phrases businesses may use to deceive you into believing their items are made in the USA. For instance, the phrases “manufactured in the USA” and “designed in the USA” only refer to a part of the production process. Similarly, “made in America” means the product could have been made in Canada or Mexico.

One last thing to look out for is the usage of the American flag sticker on labels. The flag’s use is not protected like the “made in the USA” label. So, just because you see the flag does not automatically mean the product is made domestically.

Other Tips

In addition to checking the materials and labeling, there are a few other tips you can follow to ensure you are buying US-made bar stools.

Check the Company’s “About Us” Page

This page can give insight into where the company sources and makes its products. On online and promotional materials, there is no need for companies to state the country of origin. But “made in the USA” is a huge selling point. So, if this is truly the case, you should find this information on their “About Us” page or even the product page.

Contact the Company Directly

If you can’t find the answer you are looking for on the company’s website, you can always contact the company directly. Many companies are happy to answer questions about their products and where they are sourced from.

Check Social Media Handles

Social media is a great way to learn about a company. Many companies post about their products on their social media accounts. You can also find customer questions regarding the country of origin on social media.
