How to Find Jewelry Made in the USA
It’s not too difficult to find jewelry that’s made domestically, but locating pieces created with all or nearly all of the material sourced from the USA is a lot trickier. There’s lots you need to know to determine whether you are getting something that’s truly made here, so here’s our advice.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
To be considered “made in the USA,” a product must be manufactured “all or virtually all” in the United States, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This also applies to the raw materials. The metal and stones used in jewelry are often sourced from other countries, so you may have to settle for pieces that are made in the USA with some imported materials.
For more information on finding domestic products, see our “made in the USA” guide.
Materials
Some materials used to make jewelry are more likely to be sourced from the USA than others. To be sure you are buying jewelry with as many domestically-sourced components as possible, it helps to be aware of what countries different metals and gems generally come from.
Gold
The United States ranks fourth in the world in gold mining behind China, Australia and Russia. In 2020, the U.S. mined 190 tons of this precious metal. This means you can find jewelry made with domestic gold as long as you do a little digging (no pun intended).
Silver
Most of the world’s silver mines are located in Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, China, Australia, Chile, Poland, and Serbia. Fortunately, silver is often extracted from different types of metal, including lead, copper and zinc, that are more commonly found in the United States.
Diamonds
The top diamond-producing countries are Russia, Botswana, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa, in that order. Natural diamonds are virtually non-existent in the United States. However, if you visit Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, you can pay just $13 to look for diamonds formed from volcano ash and take away anything you find at no additional cost. These diamonds come in a variety of sizes and colors, including white.
The U.S. is the globe’s third largest producer of lab-grown diamonds behind China and India. However, China leads the pack by a huge margin, as this nation produces 56 percent of all lab-grown diamonds. By contrast, the USA produces just 13 percent. Still, the search is worth it as synthetic diamonds are less expensive than natural ones, and are often just as beautiful. And even if your lab-grown diamond wasn’t produced in the United States, at least you can rest easy that it’s not a “blood diamond.”
Pearls
Japan, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, and Australia are the top-producing pearl-producing countries. However, some freshwater pearls are harvested in the United States, primarily in Tennessee. These pearls come in a variety of shapes and colors.
Emeralds
The top emerald mining country is Columbia, followed by Brazil, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the United States. The U.S. only has a few active emerald mines remaining.
Rubies
The top two countries where rubies are found are Myanmar and Mozambique. Other locations include Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Madagascar. If you are into hunting for your own gems in the wild you might be able to find rubies in a few U.S. locations, such as Wyoming and North Carolina. If you visit the Cherokee Ruby and Sapphire Mine, you can pay a fee to dig for those gemstones.
Sapphires
The majority of the world’s top-grade sapphires are sourced from Sri Lanka. Other sapphire-mining countries include Madagascar, Australia, and Tanzania. However, you can find USA-sourced sapphires, mainly from Montana.
Turquoise
High-quality turquoise generally comes from Iran, Egypt, China, Mexico, and the southwestern United States. Many people aren’t aware of how rare natural turquoise stones are. Many turquoise mines, including those in the U.S., have been depleted, and imitation turquoise is extremely common.
Labeling
Labeling is another important factor to consider when shopping for made in the USA products. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the U.S. Code mandates that all imported goods have the country of origin on the label. Furthermore, the “made in the USA” label is protected by the FTC.
However, there’s a catch – a few catches, in fact. First, the FTC doesn’t have a pre-approval process brands must follow to put a “made in the USA” label on their products. This means brands can decide for themselves if they meet the qualification criteria. If you find a piece of jewelry or any other product that has a made in the USA label but doesn’t meet the standard, be sure to report the company so the FTC can stop them from using the label.
Another thing to keep in mind is some brands use misleading language on labels. Examples include “designed in the USA” or “assembled in the USA.” When you see those phrases, it likely means only part of the manufacturing process took place here. Also, if a company labels a product as “made in America,” it could have been produced in Canada or Mexico.
In addition, don’t trust the use of the American flag sticker. The image of the Stars and Stripes is not protected, and some companies that don’t make their products here take advantage of that.
Final Tips
Below are some more ways to find American made jewelry and other items.
Visit the Website
Go to the brand’s website and check out the “About Us” or “Our Story” page. Companies know “Made in the USA” is a great selling point, so if they produce domestic goods, they are likely to emphasize it there. Even if they don’t make all their products here, the pages that describe individual items probably include key words and phrases such as “Made in the USA” or “imported.”
The U.S. government doesn’t require manufacturers to name the country of origin for their goods on their websites or in advertising. Therefore, if you don’t see that information, it’s a good sign that the company doesn’t make its products in the USA.
Look at Social Media
Some brands use social media to promote their products and even answer questions. This is a good way to learn about how their goods are made.
Contact the Manufacturer
Still unsure of where a company makes its jewelry? Just give them a call and ask a representative the country of origin as well as where the metal, stones, and other raw materials are sourced from.
Jewelry Makers Not Made in the USA
Although some of the raw materials for jewelry can be found in the United States, the metal and stones are often sourced from elsewhere. Also, most major jewelry brands do some or all of their manufacturing overseas.
Here are just a few examples of famous jewelry companies that don’t make most of their pieces here.
- Cartier – they manufacture their jewelry in Switzerland.
- Tiffany & Co. – some of their jewelry is manufactured in the United States, but other pieces are made in Spain, Italy, France, and Japan.
- Swarovski – they are an Austrian brand.
