How to Find Holsters Made in the USA

So, we don’t want to just provide you with a list of recommendations – we want to equip you with the knowledge to do your own made in the USA shopping, too! Below are our tips on labeling, raw materials sourcing, and other factors to help you cut through the confusion and find an American made holster.

What Does “Made In The USA” Mean?

First, let’s define the term “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), this phrase refers to any item “all or virtually all” made in the United States, from raw materials sourcing to assembly.

To dig deeper into FTC’s definition of “Made in USA,” check out our comprehensive made in the USA labels and shopping guide.

Materials

When shopping for domestic gun holsters, be sure to determine that the materials were sourced from within the United States. Below are the most common holster materials and the countries they typically come from.

Leather

Gun holsters are traditionally made from leather, and many of today’s gun owners still prefer it because of its durability and attractive appearance. Luckily, the United States is a major leather producer, so the odds are in your favor when searching for a holster made from this material. However, some top-quality leather is imported from nations such as Italy. Furthermore, US companies have been known to get their leather from countries such as China because it is less expensive.

Nylon

Nylon is a popular material used in holster manufacturing because it is stretchy but sturdy enough to carry a handgun. Unfortunately, the United States only ranks fourth among nylon-producing countries, far behind China, the global leader in this area. But if you have your heart set on a nylon holster, don’t give up. The US produces 2.4 million tons of nylon annually.

Kydex

Kydex is a type of thermoplastic used to make various products, including gun holsters, because it is durable, chemical-resistant, and fire-retardant. Rohm & Haas Co. in the Philadelphia area invented Kydex in 1965. Sekisui Chemical eventually acquired the Kydex brand, but the material is still produced domestically at three manufacturing plants in Pennsylvania and Michigan. This means your best bet for buying a holster made in the USA might be getting a Kydex one.

Labeling

Labeling is another key factor when shopping for holsters and other goods made in the USA. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code states that all imported products must have the country or origin listed on the physical label. This is a huge help when you visit a store where you check for the phrase “Made in the USA” on labels.

Still, you should keep in mind that the FTC doesn’t have a pre-approval process brands need to follow to put a “Made in the USA” label on their products, which can lead to false labeling. In addition, beware of similar-sounding phrases. For example, if a label says “Made in America,” that could mean an item was manufactured in Canada or Mexico. “Assembled/Designed in the USA” tends to be a giveaway that only a portion of the manufacturing process took place domestically. And if you see “Made in the USA with Imported Materials,” that product wasn’t truly made here, according to the FTC definition we mentioned earlier.

Finally, the image of the American flag on a label might actually be a red flag that an item wasn’t made in the US, but the brand wants consumers to think it is. Therefore, you still need to look for the phrase “Made in the USA.”

Other Tips

Here are more tips for finding a gun holster made in the USA.

Check the Company’s Website

If you are shopping online, check the brand’s official website. Companies that make their products in the USA tend to be loud and proud about it because they know it’s a big selling point. Some brands will detail their raw material sourcing and production process on their “About Us” page. We also recommend looking at the product description for each holster you are considering to see if it says “Made in the USA.” If it doesn’t, you are better off assuming it was made overseas.

Don’t Forget About Amazon

Online shopping sites like Amazon may list the country of origin for an item on its product description page. If you don’t see that information there, look at the FAQ section. Another shopper may have already asked about where the product was made.

Call the Company

Remember, you can call or email the company to ask about where their products are manufactured and where they source raw materials. A brand representative can answer your questions so you can make sure you are buying a holster that was truly made here.

During our research, we found some well-known holster brands that were made abroad. We’ve included them so you can cross them off your list. We are always updating our “Made in the USA” lists, so if we find more companies that don’t make their holsters in the USA, we will list them here.
