How To Find American Made Baby Cribs

In addition to showcasing American made baby cribs, we want to help you shop more thoughtfully. Let’s dig into the baby crib industry—from sourcing materials to reading labels and finding high-quality cribs made in the USA. First, let’s discuss what “made in the USA” really means and how to understand it.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

First, let’s define what it means for something to be made in the USA. The “made in the USA” label is a term that is protected by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and can only be used if the product is “all or virtually all” made in the United States.

This means that all the raw materials should be sourced from the USA. And all of the manufacturing and assembling should happen in the USA. Unfortunately, the FTC does not do the best job policing the usage of the “made in the USA” label, so it will be worth your time to do additional research.

To learn more about this, check out our detailed labeling guide.

Materials

Researching the materials used in baby cribs should give you an idea if the product is made in the USA. Nowadays, most cribs are made from just about any type of wood.

Wood

Several types of wood are in furniture manufacturing, including baby cribs. The main types of wood used are hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods, such as oak and maple, are more expensive and durable.

The USA also has one of the highest production of hardwood lumber in the world, falling just ever so slightly behind China. This means there is an ample supply of American hardwoods for manufacturers to choose from.

The two most popular types of woods used for baby cribs are ash and oak. Both of these trees are grown plentifully throughout the United States.

Make sure to ask about the type of wood used in your sofa before making a purchase. You should also ensure that the wood comes from the United States.

Labeling

Researching the product’s material can only get you so far; you’ve also got to look at the labels on products.

Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US Code states that all imported products must be labeled with the country of origin, which makes it much easier to find products made in the USA. In particular, you should look for the “made in the USA” label, which the FTC further protects.

However, we already know that the FTC does not do the best job of policing the usage of the protected “made in the USA” label. There is no pre-approval process, so it is up to the individual companies to determine whether their product meets the requirements to use the label.

You must also pay attention to the particular vocabulary used in labels. For example, words like “manufactured” or “designed” may be used to make customers believe a product is made in the USA. But these words mean only a part of the manufacturing process took place in the States. For example, the crib’s wood could be assembled in the USA, but the wheels could be imported from China.

Be wary of phrases such as “made in America.” Companies often use them, but this label actually means the product could have also been made in Mexico or Canada.

Other Tips

Here are some other helpful tips to determine if a baby crib is made in the USA.

Check the Business’s Website

Check the “About Us” page or the product page. If the product is truly made in the USA, it would be loudly promoted on the website. Companies are not required to state the country of origin on their online or promotional materials. But a US-made product is a huge selling point, so you should see this fact advertised on the website.

Call The Company

If you’re unsure, your best option is to call the company and ask directly. A representative should be able to answer all your questions.
