Where Are Stanley Products Made?

Over 100 years ago, personal water bottles were forever changed. In 1913, William Stanley Jr invented a bottle that was vacuum-sealed and completely constructed of steel. A brand that created a rugged vessel for liquids that construction workers lugged around for decades now finds itself in the hands of the TikTok-influenced.

Stanley’s original thermos was well known for its efficiency and durability. The Army even used them during World War II. Over the years, the brand has been acquired by several entities, and today, it is owned and produced by Pacific Market International (PMI).

The newest product on Stanley’s thermos shelf is the Quencher H2.0 Tumbler, which is being released in a wave of limited-edition colors. This thermos is so popular that stores like REI have to limit sales to two per customer.

Success seems to have come easy for Stanley. They made history over 100 years ago, and their products are still so sought after that they are routinely sold out. Let’s find out where these popular water bottles are being manufactured.

Verdict: Are Stanley Products Made in the USA?

No, Stanley products are not made in the USA. Stanley Thermoses are made internationally, mostly in China.

As stated in the intro above, Stanley has gone through a few acquisitions. From 1965-2002, they were owned by a company called Aladdin Industries, which owned a factory in Nashville, Tennessee. Stanley bottles were manufactured in the US prior to that point, and for the majority of the time, they were owned by Aladdin. Things changed in 1988 when Aladdin shifted production overseas.

Article from 1988 publication by Labor-Management Cooperation Brief:

PMI acquired Stanley in 2002, and overseas manufacturing remained, mostly shifting to China. Straight from the PMI website, they report using a global network of suppliers:

Here’s a view of the bottom of a Stanley Thermoses toting a “Made in China” label:

Today, the practice is very much the same. The hot-off-the-shelf Stanley products out there are also made in China. However, Stanley did change their labeling to say “Ethically Manufactured in China” … that’s better, right?

To add injury to insult, the above image was pulled from an article about a recent lawsuit against Stanley for their products containing some amount of lead. Yikes.

You’ve got to rewind through the years quite a bit to find a USA-made Stanley. They’re out there; they’re just pretty old. As far as the lead content in those thermoses, who really knows but it seems safer to avoid vintage drinking vessels of all kinds.
