How to Find Men’s Dress Shirts Made in the USA
When it comes to men’s dress shirts in the USA, we’re not just about rattling off brand names. Our mission is to arm you with the know-how to shop smarter. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty: where the materials are sourced, how they’re labeled, and the savvy strategies we use to unearth fantastic American-made dress shirt brands. First up, let’s break down what “made in the USA” truly means.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
First, before we dive deeper into what to look for when finding men’s dress shirts made in the USA, let’s define what “made in the USA” means.
The “made in the USA” label is protected by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). To use this label, “all or virtually all” of the product must be made in the USA. In other words, all aspects of the product’s manufacturing must take place in the United States – from sourcing the raw materials to manufacturing the dress shirt. Unfortunately, however, the FTC does not do the best job of policing the usage of this protected “made in the USA” label.
Check out our made in the USA guide to learn more about this label and the regulations.
Materials
When looking for a dress shirt made in the USA, you should look more closely into the product’s raw material. For men’s dress shirts, that’s cotton.
A quality men’s shirt should be made of 100% cotton. If you are on a budget, you can find dress shirts made of cotton blend, but if you’re looking for durability, 100% cotton should be your pick.
Cotton is the choice for a quality men’s dress shirt as it is a natural fiber that feels natural and comfortable on the body. Having 100% cotton also makes a huge difference in your overall look. For example, a polyester-cotton blend dress shirt may come off much shinier and less high-end.
Cotton is a 21 billion-dollar industry in the United States. This may seem like a lot, but the United States is still only third in the world’s cotton production. China and India are the leading producers of this material. However, since the USA still produces a significant amount of cotton, it should be easy to find US-made cotton. Since cotton can be grown elsewhere and primarily made in Asia, ensure that the cotton used in the dress shirt you purchase is sourced in the USA.
Labeling
Some US legislation helps us find products made in the USA. When it comes to textiles, such as men’s dress shirts, the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act helps us to know immediately what materials are used and where they come from.
This act makes it a legal requirement for companies to use standardized language on their tags to state the percentage weight of the fibers used. So, you should look for 100% cotton in your US-made men’s dress shirt. This act also makes it so that companies must clearly state the country of origin on the label.
Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US code also aids us in finding dress shirts made in the USA. This legislation states that all imported products must be labeled with the country of origin. So, when looking for a men’s dress shirt made in the USA, you should specifically look for the label “made in the USA.”
Some companies may try to be tricky with the wording on the label to allow customers to falsely infer that their dress shirts are made in the USA, so keep a critical eye out. Stay away from products labeled with any of the following:
- Manufactured in the USA
- Made in America
- Made in the USA with imported materials
- Designed in the USA
Many variations to the phrases above may imply that a product is made in the USA, but if the product is not labeled with the phrase word for word “made in the USA,” you can safely assume it is made overseas.
It is also worth noting that, as previously mentioned, the FTC does not do the best job of policing the usage of the “made in the USA” label. There is no pre-approval process, so it is up to the companies to decide whether or not their products meet the requirements. It is also up to the consumers to report incorrect usage.
Other Tips
Here are some more tips to help you find men’s dress shirts made in the USA.
Check Out the Company’s Website
A men’s dress shirt made in the USA is a huge selling point. So, companies will not usually be shy to advertise this fact. So, go online and check out the company’s website. In particular, look at their “About Us” page or product page to see if their dress shirts are made in the USA.
The legislation that requires companies to label their products with the country of origin does not apply to any online materials. Thus, silence about where their products are made will likely mean that they are not made in the USA.
American Flag Sticker Doesn’t Mean American-Made
An American flag on the label may make it look like the product is made in the USA, but this sticker is not protected. So, in reality, any company can put an American flag sticker on the label.
Call the Company
Finally, if you still can’t find any information about where a particular dress shirt is made, kick it old school and call the company. They will be able to answer your questions about where their materials are sourced and where their dress shirts are manufactured.
