How to Find Glassware Made in the USA
Finding the perfect glassware can already be a challenge, but it is even more difficult when you are looking specifically for glassware that is “made in the USA.” This is an added obstacle because only a few major glassware companies produce this material in the United States.
Here’s how to understand “made in the USA” labeling and a brief overview of what glassware production in the USA looks like.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
For products to be considered “made in the USA,” they must comply with certain guidelines. These guidelines were set in place by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to protect customers against false “made in the USA” claims made by companies.
For a product to be labeled as “made in the USA,” the company must prove that “all or virtually all” of the materials are sourced and assembled in the United States. The wording for these labels can be a bit confusing and relatively easy for companies to find a way around.

Materials
As expected from the name, glassware is made out of glass. The United States ranks third in terms of glass production, producing 6.5% of the world’s glass. China produces the most amount of glass out of any other country, creating 24.8% of all the glass in the world.
American-made glassware can be a bit challenging to find because there are a limited number of big glassware companies in the USA. Along with the big companies, there are also smaller local businesses around the United States that specialize in glassware and glass blowing.
One thing to look for when searching for glassware is to ensure that the glass is dishwasher safe. This glass will usually be thicker and sturdier to withstand the dishwasher.
Labeling
To regulate false claims made by companies, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has regulations on when a company can use the “made in the USA” label. For a product to be labeled as “made in the USA,” the company must claim that “all or virtually all” of the materials are sourced and assembled in the United States. Even when some of the materials were imported from other countries, the product can still earn this label, depending on the scale of imported materials. Some products may also be labeled as “made in the USA with international materials” when the number of imported materials goes over a specific limit.
The FTC does not keep a close eye on companies to ensure they are following all of the rules and regulations. This means that a lot of responsibility falls into the customer’s hands to watch out for these false claims. The FTC Act of 1914 allows American customers to take legal action against companies that falsely promote and label their products.
It is important to watch out for wording in labels that companies may use to purposely confuse customers. If a label says “made in America,” the product could have been produced in the USA, Canada, or Mexico.
You should also keep in mind that the use of the verbs “made” and “assembled” are not interchangeable. When a product is advertised as “assembled” in the United States, the materials are likely imported from another country and merely put together in the US. The verb “made” is more all-encompassing and more likely that the product is truly sourced and assembled in the United States.
When buying products made in the United States, it is important to research the company and the product to ensure that all production takes place in the USA. Typically, if a product is fully developed in the United States, the company will make sure to use this as a major selling point in its advertising.
Other Tips
Here are some of our other top tips to help you find glassware made in the USA.
Check the Website
Perusing a company’s website can go a long way in seeing whether or not a product is truly made in the USA. If a product is truly made in the USA, this fact will likely be heavily promoted on the website.
On the flip side, be careful if you don’t see any claims online about where a company’s product is made. Unlike the actual labeling of the product, companies are not required to state where their products are made on any online materials.
Contact the Company
When searching for products made in the United States, it is important to do research and even to contact the manufacturer when you are unsure about where the production occurred.
Be Wary of American Flag Stickers
American flag stickers can be seen on some products. Customers often assume that if a product has an American flag sticker, then it was “made in the USA,” however the government does not regulate these stickers. This means that companies have free reign to use these stickers as they please, even if their product was neither sourced nor assembled in the United States.
