How To Find Dog Treats Made in the USA

When it comes to dog treat manufacturing in the USA, it’s not merely about listing brands; we aim to arm you with the tools to make savvy choices. Let’s take a closer look at the industry: from sourcing ingredients to labeling, and strategies for finding top-notch American-made dog treats. First, let’s demystify the “made in the USA” label and decipher its meaning.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

First, let’s define what it means for a product to be “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), to be “made in the USA,” a product must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. This means that almost all of the significant parts, processing, and labor must be of US origin.

Check out our detailed labeling guide if you’d like to learn more about this topic.

Ingredients

When shopping for dog treats made in the USA, look at the ingredients and where they’re sourced. Generally, you should look for treats that contain natural and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Here are some common ingredients used in dog treats:

Meat and Grains

The USA is home to the world’s best natural resources and humanely-raised, high-quality meat and poultry. Look for treats that contain only USA-raised proteins, such as beef, chicken, turkey, and salmon.

It’s important to note that the USA imports some lamb and beef from other countries, mainly New Zealand or Australia, so double-check the label to ensure that what you’re buying is domestic.

Grains are another vital component of many dog treats. Look for American-grown and milled grains, such as oats, barley, corn, and wheat.

Fruits and Vegetables

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, the USA has some of the freshest produce around. So look for treats that contain US-grown fruits and vegetables, such as apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, and blueberries.

Vitamins and Supplements

Many dog treats contain vitamins and supplements, but most vitamins and supplements found in dog treats are sourced from other countries. Instead, look for natural and domestic-sourced ingredients such as kelp, hemp, flaxseed, and probiotics.

Labeling

When buying dog treats, it’s important to check the label for information about where the product is made. According to Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations, any dog treats made abroad must be labeled as such. This legislation, along with the FTC’s protection of the “made in the USA” label, makes it easier to find US-made products.

However, keep in mind that the FTC cannot guarantee the accuracy of all product information and labels and can only intervene when someone makes a complaint about false or misleading labeling. So, it’s essential to be a vigilant consumer and do additional research on the origins of products you purchase for your furry friend.

Also, beware of rewarding language such as “made in America” or “packaged in the USA,” as these terms do not actually mean that the dog treats were made in the USA. Another misleading phrase is “manufactured in the USA with imported ingredients.” This means that while the product may be assembled in the US, it still contains foreign components.

A final thing to watch out for is the usage of the American flag on labels. The usage of the American flag is not regulated, so just because a product looks American does not necessarily mean that it is made in the United States.

Other Tips

Here are other things you can do to ensure you’re buying the best American-made dog treats for your pup.

Buy From Small Businesses

Many small businesses are passionate about sourcing their ingredients locally and ethically. When shopping for dog treats, don’t look past your local small businesses. They will be able to provide you with detailed information about the origin of their ingredients.

You can also buy from your local pet shop and ask them about their products. You will likely be able to get more information about the country of origin of their items as well.

Check The Company’s Website

In addition to looking for labels, you can also check the company’s website.  Most companies display their ingredients and sourcing information on their website, so you can easily find where their ingredients come from.

Keep in mind that companies are not required to state the country of origin regarding online or promotional materials. So, look for companies that are transparent about their sourcing information and take the time to read through the information on their websites.

Ask for Recommendations

Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations from your veterinarian or an experienced pet parent. They may have great suggestions for American-made dog treats you can try out for your pup.

Call the Manufacturer

If you’re still unsure of a product’s origin or ingredients, don’t hesitate to call the manufacturer and ask them directly. Manufacturers are usually more than happy to answer any questions that you may have about their products.
