How to Find Weightlifting Racks Made in the USA

Weightlifting racks are an essential part of any home gym, and having one made in the USA can be a great way to support local businesses and the American economy. Shopping for weightlifting racks made in the USA doesn’t have to be difficult, and with a few simple tips, you can find the perfect option for your home gym.

What Does “Made In The USA” Mean?

First and foremost, it is crucial to understand what exactly “made in the USA” means. Products truly made in the USA must be manufactured, assembled, and produced in the United States. This includes all components such as materials, labor, and other inputs necessary for production.

For more information on what “made in the USA” truly means, consult our detailed article on the FTC’s guidelines.

Materials

When shopping for weightlifting racks made in the USA, you should pay close attention to the material used. Knowing where the material comes from will give you a leg up in determining and finding products made in the United States. When it comes to weightlifting racks, you’ll be looking specifically at steel. Steel is an incredibly dense and strong material that can handle your personal record reps!

The USA is one of the top steel manufacturers in the world, so finding weightlifting racks made in the USA with US-made steel should be pretty easy, in theory. However, despite the country being one of the top 5 manufacturers, it still cannot compete with steel manufacturing giants like China, Japan, and India.

With a lot of manufacturers trying to cut corners and cut down on manufacturing costs by sourcing their steel from cheaper countries overseas, it’s important that the steel used in your weightlifting rack is sourced domestically. This is because American-made steel is three times stronger than Chinese-made steel. By purchasing a true USA-made weightlifting rack, you can be much more certain about the quality of the make, especially since it’ll be holding up to hundreds of pounds!

Labeling

When shopping for weightlifting racks made in the USA, you should also look at the product’s labeling on the physical product itself or its packaging. According to the US Code Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304, all products made abroad must be labeled accordingly. This helps us to easily weed out foreign-made products. Additionally, the FTC protects the “made in the USA” label, as defined above. But remember that the FTC does not have a pre-approval process for companies to use this label. Instead, it’s up to the companies to determine whether their products are truly “made in the USA.”

There are a couple of other things to watch out for regarding labeling. Namely, some companies may use confusing wording on their labels to make it seem like their products are made in the USA when they are not. Examples of such labels include:

  • Made in America
  • Designed in the USA
  • Assembled in the USA
  • Made in the USA with imported materials

None of the above labels are synonymous with “made in the USA.”

You should also watch for the American flag sticker on labels. The usage of the American flag on labels is not regulated, so if you see one, do not equate the product with being USA-made, as it may not be the case.

Other Tips

Some other tips for ensuring you are buying American-made weightlifting racks include:

Check the Company’s Website

Look for information on a company’s website, specifically on the “About Us” or product page. If the weightlifting rack is genuinely “made in the USA,” the company should advertise this on its website, as it is a huge selling point. On the other hand, if you can’t find any information, keep in mind that companies don’t need to state the country of origin of their products. So, it’s generally safer to assume that the product is made abroad.

Check Social Media

Social media handles are another great way to research a company and its products. The company may post about its manufacturing process on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook. If they have an active social media presence, you can also interact with them directly to ask questions and get more information about their products.

Call the Company

If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact the company directly. Calling and speaking with a representative from the company will give you the most accurate information on the product and its source.
