How to Find Vacuum Cleaners Made in the USA
While we have provided you with a complete list of vacuum cleaners made in the USA, it always helps to know what to look out for when looking for American-made vacuum cleaners. This knowledge can help you with your own research down the line.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
Before we dive into what to look out for when looking for vacuum cleaners made in the USA, let’s first define the all-important label “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), “made in the USA” means “all or virtually all” of the product is made in the United States. That means every part of the process, from designing to manufacturing to assembling, should take place on U.S. soil.

Materials
To find US-made vacuum cleaners, one of the first steps in your research is to understand the most commonly used materials to craft vacuum cleaners. Knowing where these materials come from and whether they are produced in the USA can go a long way in helping you find American-made vacuum cleaners and other products as well. Vacuum cleaners are generally made up of a combination of metals and plastics.
Plastic
The outer casing and some internal parts of vacuum cleaners are generally made of plastic. There are a few different types of plastics that can be used to craft vacuum cleaners, the most popular of which is ABS. China makes a large percentage of the world’s plastic. But surprisingly, you can still find American-made plastics. In fact, the US produces 20% of the world’s plastic. So, while the USA does not manufacture plastic to the extent China does, it is possible to find American-made plastic parts with some research.
Metal
The metal components of a vacuum cleaner, such as the motor, are usually made of steel or aluminum.
It’s relatively easy to find American-made steel. In fact, the USA is one of the largest steel manufacturers in the world, coming in fourth, behind China, Japan, and India. When it comes to steel, it’s doubly important to ensure it is American-made, as American steel is three times stronger than Chinese steel.
Unsurprisingly, China is the world’s leader when it comes to aluminum as well. However, unlike plastic and steel, aluminum production in the USA is not as widespread. While the U.S. does produce some aluminum domestically, most of the aluminum found in the USA is much more likely to have come from China. With that said, it’s not impossible to find American-made aluminum; you’ll just need to do a bit more digging.
Other Materials
Of course, vacuum cleaners are not made solely of plastics and metals. Other materials found in vacuum cleaners include rubber, silicone, copper (for wiring), and filtration materials. All of these materials are produced in the USA to some extent.
Labeling
We’ve already slightly touched on the topic of labels. Namely, when looking for a USA-made vacuum cleaner, you should look for the “made in the USA” label. Additionally, according to Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code, all imported products should be labeled as such, which is why you’ll often see labels that say “made in China,” “made in Italy,” or “made in Bangladesh.” While this certainly makes research a lot easier, unfortunately, things are not as simple as looking for a label. There are a few things to watch out for.
While the FTC does protect the usage of the “made in the USA” label, it does not do the best job of policing its usage. Since there is no pre-approval process, basically any company can slap this label on their product if they believe they meet the requirements. So, it always helps to do additional research just in case!
Companies may also use similar language that may confuse consumers. Similar labels that don’t necessarily mean the same thing as “made in the USA” include:
- Made in America – This can mean the product is made in Canada or Mexico, not just the USA
- Manufactured/Assembled/Designed in the USA – This means only a part of the entire manufacturing process takes place in the USA
A final thing to watch out for is that if you shop online, you’ll need to remember that companies are not required to state the country of origin of their products on their website or on any promotional materials. But since “made in the USA” is a huge selling point, if this is the case for the vacuum cleaner you’re looking at, you will likely be able to see this phrase displayed somewhere on their website, such as the product page or About Us page.

Here are a couple of other tips to keep in mind to help you with your research.
