How to Find Swing Sets & Playsets Made in the USA
Beyond our complete list of swing set brands made in the USA, it helps to learn to do your own research. Here’s our guide to finding swing sets made in the USA, including what it means for something to truly be “made in the USA.”
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
We use the Federal Trade Commission’s definition to define “made in the USA.” For the FTC to consider a product as truly “made in the USA,” it must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. This includes every aspect of the manufacturing of the product, including the sourcing of the materials and final assembly of the product. So, if a swing set is made in the USA with foreign materials, it’s not actually considered made in the USA.
Unfortunately, just looking for this label is not often enough, as there are a few things to look out for since the FTC does not do the best job in terms of policing its usage. But we’ll go over all of that more in detail below as well as in our complete labeling guide.
Materials
When looking for a swing set made in the USA, the first step is to understand what materials swing sets are made of. Understanding these materials and their origins plays a huge part in finding USA-made products. Swing sets are typically made of wood, vinyl, or metal (steel or aluminum).
Wood
Wood production in the USA is a big industry. This is why finding swing sets made in the USA is not as difficult as it is with other products. Many swing set brands use locally sourced woods to build their swing sets (cedar, redwood, and pine are popular), as the USA has one of the highest production of lumber in the world! Of course, this doesn’t mean all wood swing sets are made in the USA, as Chinese lumber production is still substantial, so always double-check the country of origin of the wood used.
Vinyl
Many swing sets are made of vinyl or vinyl-covered wood. Vinyl is great because it is safe, durable, and weather-resistant. Most of the world’s vinyl comes from Asia. However, with that said, plenty of vinyl manufacturers in the USA have factories and distribution centers all over the country, so it’s entirely possible to find American-sourced vinyl swing sets with some research.
Metal
While metal swing sets are not as popular, you can find them and purchase them if that’s what you’re looking for. Metal swing sets are generally made of either aluminum or steel. Aluminum mostly comes from China. The USA does produce some level of this metal, but definitely not to the extent that China does, so always check the country of origin.
In terms of steel, you’re more likely to find American-made steel than American-made aluminum, though Chinese-made steel is still abundant. With that said, it’s very important to find metal swing sets made with American-made steel, as it is three times stronger than Chinese steel.
Labeling
Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code also states that products made abroad must be labeled as such. This is why you’ll see familiar “made in China/India/Italy” labels on the product itself or its packaging.
As for the “made in the USA” label, as previously mentioned, companies can only use this label if they meet the FTC’s guidelines. However, there is no pre-approval process, so finding American-made products is slightly more complicated, as it’s up to the companies to decide whether or not they meet the guidelines and standards. With that said, if you come across any products that are falsely using this label, report them!
Furthermore, some companies use misleading language that may confuse customers into thinking their products are USA-made. Examples of such language include:
- Assembled/Manufactured in the USA
- Made in the USA with imported materials
- Made in America
Companies may also use the US flag or other patriotic images that do not necessarily mean the product is truly “made in the USA.”
Another major thing to look out for is the fact that companies are not required to state their product’s country of origin on their online or promotional materials.

Since companies are not required to state the country of origin on their website, you may not always find where a particular swing set is made when shopping online. But the good news is, “made in the USA” is a huge boasting point. This means if a swing set is made in the USA, you are likely to find this information on their website somewhere, such as the About Us page, home page, or product information page. If you can’t find any information regarding the swing set’s country of origin, it’s better to assume it’s made abroad.
Stalk Their Social Media
Since “made in the USA” is a selling point, check the brand’s social media to see if the company talks about their manufacturing process at some point.
