We want to go a step further than simply providing you with a list of rugs made in the USA; we also want to equip you with the knowledge for you to do your own research down the line. So, let’s go over everything you need to know to find rugs made in the USA.
What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
First, let’s define what “made in the USA” means. According to the FTC, “made in the USA” means that a product is “all or virtually all” made in the United States. This means everything from the sourcing of the materials to the assembly of the product must take place on US soil. So, for example, if a large percentage of the materials used to manufacture a rug come from overseas, the rug cannot be considered “made in the USA.”

Materials
Now that we’ve defined what it means for a rug to be “made in the USA,” let’s go over the first step to finding rugs made in the USA: the materials. To find a true American-made rug, the rug should also be made of American materials. But what materials are most common when it comes to rugs? And are these materials produced in the USA?
Wool
Wool is one of the most common materials used to create natural fiber rugs. Wool rugs are luxurious and feel incredibly comfortable on the skin, making them a high-end choice for rug owners. Thankfully, wool is relatively easy to find in the USA. While Australia wears the crown in terms of wool production worldwide, the USA does not fall too far behind.
Cotton
Cotton is another popular material used to craft rugs. While cotton rugs may not be as durable as some other popular rug materials, they are pretty easy to look after and straightforward to clean. Like wool, cotton production in the USA is significant. In fact, cotton is a 21-billion-dollar industry, so it’s relatively easy to find cotton made in the USA. But with that said, China and India are even larger cotton producers, so cheaper cotton rugs may be made from foreign materials.
Nylon

Beyond the materials, you should also look at the product’s label to determine whether or not the rug is made in the USA. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US Code states that all products made abroad must be labeled as such.
When it comes to fabric products like rugs, another thing to keep in mind is the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, which states that textile products must be labeled according to the fiber material used, the percentage of material used, and the country of origin.
For example, if a company produces a rug in China that is made from 50% cotton and 50% nylon, the label must clearly state these facts.
All of this, plus the FTC-regulated label “made in the USA,” makes our job so much easier. But there are a few things to keep in mind.
Unfortunately, the FTC does not pre-approve the use of the “made in the USA” label, so it’s up to the individual companies to determine whether or not their rugs meet the qualifications to be able to use the label. So, if you do come across any products that misuse this label during your own research, make sure to report them!
Secondly, many companies may use similar wording that can trick customers into thinking their products are made in the USA when, in reality, they are produced elsewhere. Examples of such wording include:
- Made in America
- Manufactured in the USA
- Designed in the USA
- Assembled in the USA
Finally, beware of the American flag on labels. The usage of American flags on product labels is not regulated, so just because you see the flag does not automatically mean the product is American-made.
