How to Find Phone Cases & Protectors Made in the USA

While we have already done the research for you in terms of finding phone cases made in the USA, it’s important to have the knowledge to do your own research. In particular, you should know where the products come from by looking at the materials and labeling. Here’s how to do that.

What Does “Made In The USA” Mean?

When a company advertises a product as being “made in the USA,” it means that “all or virtually all” of the materials in the product were US-sourced, as well as the production, assembly, and labor involved in manufacturing. The FTC has clear and strict guidelines on products “made in the USA.” Make sure to check out our complete guide to spotting US-made products for more on this.

Materials

First, it’s important to see what materials the phone case is made of. This is the first step in finding phone cases made in the USA on your own. Here are some of the most popular and common materials phone cases are made of and where these materials generally come from.

Plastic

It may come as no surprise that China is the number one manufacturing country for the world’s plastic. And plastic, being a very versatile and cost-effective material, is one of the most common materials used to produce standard phone cases. With that said, 20% of the world’s plastic is still produced in the USA, so with some sleuthing and research, you should still be able to find plastic phone cases made in the USA.

Silicon

Silicon is another popular material choice for phone cases. Silicon phone cases are inexpensive, durable, lightweight, and come in many colors. This synthetic material is also largely produced in China. Other key players in silicon production include Russia, Brazil, and Norway, though definitely not to the extent that China produces this material. The USA doesn’t fall too far behind, coming in fifth in silicon production worldwide.

Rubber

Rubber is a popular material used in phone cases as it can help protect the phone from drops and impacts. Even in phone cases made largely of other materials, such as wood and plastic, you may find some rubber added for that extra durability and cushioning it offers. You will have much better luck finding a USA-made phone case if you look specifically for synthetic rubber cases rather than natural rubber. This is because next to no natural rubber is produced in the USA, with Thailand being the largest exporter at 32% of global exports. On the other hand, the USA remains a top player in synthetic rubber production.

Wood

Phone cases can be made of various types of wood. Hardwoods such as walnuts are more likely to be produced in the USA, as the country comes in second to only China when it comes to hardwood production. Especially if the phone case company favors local trees to produce their phone cases, you can rest assured the phone case is likely to be 100% made in the USA. Bamboo is another popular material, but as the USA is one of the largest importers of bamboo, a phone case made of bamboo is likely not made in the USA.

Aluminum

Aluminum is the most common metal used in phone cases as it is lightweight and sturdy. China also leads the pack regarding aluminum production, with the USA falling quite behind. This means that while the USA does produce some aluminum domestically, most aluminum found in the USA is likely to have come from China, so make sure to check the label!

Labeling

Speaking of labeling, the second step to finding phone cases made in the USA is to look at the label. Thankfully, laws like Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code help us make our search for USA-made phone cases so much easier. This law states that companies must label all imported products with the country of origin.

However, even though it seems as simple as looking at the label to determine whether or not something is made in the USA, here’s the kicker: no pre-approval is needed.

Furthermore, some companies may use confusing language to trick the customer into thinking their product is made in the USA when, in fact, it is not. Examples of such tricky language include:

  • Designed in the USA
  • Made in America
  • Assembled in the USA

Also, watch out for any American flags on the label. The usage of the American flag on a product’s label is not regulated, so just because there is a flag does not necessarily mean the product is made in the USA.

Finally, when it comes to online shopping, it’s important to remember that the above law regarding labeling does not apply. So, if a brand does not outrightly say their product is made in the USA (which is a huge boasting point), it’s likely the product is made elsewhere. If you’d like to confirm where a certain phone case is made, you can also call or chat with the company and ask directly!

Other Tips

Here are a couple of other tips to help you find phone cases made in the USA.

Go on Amazon

If you can’t find anything regarding where a certain phone case is made, go to an online shopping site like Amazon and scroll down to the country of origin. The shopping site may already have it listed for you. You should also check the FAQs, as someone may have already asked this question.

Check Social Media

As mentioned, having a product made in the USA is a huge selling point, so the company’s social media should be blasting this fact if this is the case. So, scroll past photos and videos to see if you see anything regarding the manufacturing process of this product.
