About

Slinky is an absolute classic in the American toy industry – and they are still made in the USA! The Slinky is a helical spring toy invented in the early 1940s by Richard T. James, a naval engineer. It gained popularity due to its ability to “walk” down stairs and perform tricks thanks to its helical design. First demonstrated at Gimbels department store in 1945, the toy quickly became a hit, selling out within minutes. Originally manufactured by James Industries, the Slinky was produced in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and later acquired by different companies. Throughout its history, the Slinky has remained an iconic toy, known for its affordability and versatility as both a plaything and a teaching tool.
