Big Ass Fans (yes, that’s their real name!) was originally founded by Carey Smith in 1999 as HVLS Fan Co. HVLS stood for High Volume Low Speed Fans – they used their massive size rather than speed to cool down large areas such as factories and barns. Customers kept asking about their “big ass fans,” so they officially changed their name. Nearly all of their fans are made in Kentucky, and they take great pride in being made in the USA as well as a major employer in its hometown and having most of their suppliers within a day’s drive.
