Automotive
The auto industry is front and center when we think about the rich history of American manufacturing. For decades, the United States led the world in automotive production. Unfortunately, in 1980, our country was passed by Japan as the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, and subsequently by China in 2008. The auto industry is still huge in the U.S. today though, accounting for over 3% of our country’s Gross Domestic Product. Looking at the big three automakers (Ford, GM, Chrysler), over 75% of their U.S. sales in 2018 came from U.S. factories, which has been steady over the past 10 years. But how can we tell which models are part of the 75% and which are not? Lucky for us, the auto industry has a lot of regulations on manufacturing transparency. Your VIN (vehicle identification number) will tell you the exact factory that your car came from. Same for tires too, just look for the DOT code on the side of the tire.
