What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?
Before we dive straight in, let’s define what it means for something to be “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), it means “all or virtually all” of the product is made in the United States — that’s everything from the sourcing of the materials to the assembly and packaging of the final product. Take, for example, an umbrella that is technically assembled in the United States but with materials that come from abroad. The FTC would not consider this umbrella to be 100% “made in the USA.”

Materials
To find USA-made umbrellas, we need to first look at the materials used. As mentioned, if an umbrella is made with foreign materials, it’s not truly “made in the USA.” So, let’s look at some common materials manufacturers use to produce umbrellas and see where these materials come from.
Nylon
One of the most common materials for the umbrella’s fabric is nylon due to its lightweight and water-resistant properties. Although nylon is largely produced in China, the USA produces it on a smaller scale, producing roughly 2.4 million tons each year.
Polyester
Polyester is another common material used for the fabric portion of the umbrella. As you might be able to guess, the vast majority of the world’s polyester comes from Asia. But, surprisingly, the USA produces more than a million tons of the material each year. In fact, a couple of the top 10 polyester-producing companies in the world are based in the United States!
Steel
Steel is the cheapest material used for the ribs and shaft of the umbrella. China is the number one producer of this material, producing more than half of the world’s steel. But the USA does not lag too far behind, coming in fourth in terms of world production. You can really see why it’s important to look at American-made materials, as American-made steel is three times stronger than Chinese-made steel.
Aluminum
Many manufacturers also use aluminum for the ribs and shaft, as this material is lightweight. To no one’s surprise, China is the leading producer of this material. Although the USA does produce aluminum to some degree, it is definitely not to the extent China does, so it’s always worth doing your research to ensure that the aluminum used in an umbrella comes from the USA.
Fiberglass

Labeling
Now that you have an understanding of the materials that make up an umbrella, the second step to finding a USA-made umbrella is to look at the label.
Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US Code states that all imported materials must be labeled accordingly. This is why you will see labels such as “made in China” and “made in India” on all of your products. Plus, the FTC protects the usage of the coveted “made in the USA” label, so finding USA-made umbrellas is often as easy as looking for this label.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Unfortunately, the “made in the USA” label does not require pre-approval, so companies must determine whether they meet the qualifications to use it.
There are also labels that seem similar to “made in the USA” but are not, such as “manufactured in the United States”, “designed in the USA”, or “made in the USA with imported materials”. None of these labels are synonymous with “made in the USA” and signify that only a portion of the manufacturing occurs domestically.
Other things to watch out for include the American flag sticker, which, technically, any manufacturer can affix to their label. There are no regulations regarding its use.
