How to Find Sinks Made in the USA

Beyond simply knowing which sink brands are made in the USA, it’s worth knowing how to do your own research. Here is precisely how to do it.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Before we get into it, let’s define what it means for a sink to be “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), this means “all or virtually all” of the product is made in the United States. That means even the materials used to make the sink should ideally be from the USA. But we’ll soon dive deeper into why it’s important to look at more than the product’s “made in the USA” label.

For more information, check our detailed “made in the USA” guide.

Materials

The first step in finding sinks made in the USA is understanding what they are made of. As mentioned, for a sink to be considered “made in the USA,” it must be manufactured with USA-made materials. However, sinks can be made from a wide variety of materials.

Here are some of the most common.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is one of the most common materials used to make sinks as it is a durable material resistant to rust. China currently produces a large percentage of the world’s stainless steel. However, the United States has significant iron ore deposits and manufactures lots of stainless steel domestically. Since Chinese-made steel tends to be cheaper, it is generally easier to find stainless steel sinks made with Chinese materials, but premium USA-made sinks make a point to use domestic stainless steel. It’s worth noting that steel made in the USA is three times stronger than the Chinese-made alternative.

Cast Iron

Cast iron is sometimes the chosen material for high-end kitchen and bathroom sinks due to its durability. Iron is widely available in the USA, though it is still far from top iron-producing countries like Australia, Brazil, and China. As with stainless steel, it’s definitely worth double-checking the country of origin of a cast iron sink, as lower-cost cast iron sinks may be made of imported materials.

Porcelain

Porcelain, a type of ceramic, is another common material used for bathroom sinks. Unsurprisingly, China is again the number one producer of porcelain worldwide. That said, just because the United States has a much smaller market does not mean that USA-made porcelain sinks are impossible to find—they are just much more difficult to find.

Natural Stone

A natural stone sink is a great option for those looking for a luxurious look in their bathroom and kitchen. These sinks are carved from solid stone, such as granite, marble, or travertine. Thankfully, many types of natural stone are quarried in the USA, so finding USA-made natural stone sinks is not as difficult as finding other materials. However, keep in mind that some luxury sinks made of natural stone may still be imported from countries like Italy. So, as always, it’s important to check the manufacturing country.

Glass

Glass sinks are durable and do not stain or scratch, making them a popular choice for those looking for a more modern look. Glass is another sink material that is pretty common and sizeable in the United States. While the amount of glass we manufacture domestically still pales compared to countries like China, finding USA-made glass sinks is possible with some research.

Labeling

The second step to finding sinks made in the USA is to look at the label. The first thing to keep in mind is that the FTC protects the usage of the “made in the USA” label. The second thing to note is that according to Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US Code, all imported products must be labeled as such with their country of origin.

With these two regulations, it may seem that finding USA-made sinks is as simple as looking for the label. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple in practice.

Despite the fact that the FTC protects the “made in the USA” label, they do not do the best job of policing its use. Notably, no pre-approval process exists, meaning any company can slap this label on their product.

Additionally, some companies may use confusing language that may seem synonymous with “made in the USA” when, in reality, the product is made abroad. Here are a few examples of this type of language you may see on labels:

  • Made in America: “America” may refer to the USA, but it can also refer to Canada or Mexico.
  • Assembled/Designed in the USA: Only a portion of the manufacturing process takes place in the United States.
  • Made in the USA with imported materials: This product is not truly USA-made since it is made with foreign parts. And, as we’ve discussed, “made in the USA” means “all or virtually all” of the product is made in the United States.
  • Designed in the USA: This means the company is based in the USA, but the manufacturing and assembly occur abroad.

What About Online Shopping?

The reality is that many of us shop online nowadays, so you may wonder, “Are online marketplaces transparent about where their manufacturing takes place?” Unfortunately, there are currently no regulations requiring companies to state the country of origin of their products on their online or promotional materials.

Other Tips

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind to help you with your research.

Check the Company’s Website

While companies do not have to state the country of origin on their websites, if a sink is truly USA-made, you should be able to find this information somewhere on the website. “Made in the USA” is a big selling point, so if this is the case, you should be able to find it on their Home page, About Us page, or on the product page itself.

Go Online Shopping

You could also check online retailers like Amazon or Walmart. While these marketplaces aren’t legally required to do so, they sometimes list the country of origin in the Product Description section.

Call the Company

If you still need to determine whether a particular sink you’re considering is made in the USA, you can always call the company and ask directly.
