Musgrave Pencil Co. was founded in 1916; using the abundant supply of Tennesee red cedar, he started selling the wood to pencil makers. The company operated as a slat provider to pencil companies right up until World War I which affected international trading, forcing them to move production of pencils in-house. By the time of the Great Depression in 1929, they were speciality imprinting their pencils which remains a critical part of their business. Governor Ellington dubbed Shelbyville “The Pencil City” in the late 1950s. The Musgrave Pencil Company’s slogan is “Where American Pencils Are Made.”
