About

Mainers is a consumer winter handwear brand launched in 2021 under parent company Tempshield Cryo-Protection, which was founded in 1980 by Ted and Laura Sweeney in Trenton, Maine. After Jim Woldenberg purchased Tempshield in 2018, he saw an opportunity to apply the company’s decades of experience making cryogenic gloves for laboratories, NASA, and the U.S. military to a line of consumer mittens and gloves. Production takes place across two facilities in Trenton, just outside Acadia National Park. Materials are cut using laser and die-cutting machines in a 10,000-square-foot building, then transported to Tempshield’s main facility where stitchers assemble the finished products using the same quality-control standards developed for laboratory gloves. Mainers mittens and gloves use materials such as Gore-Tex, recycled synthetic insulation, wool, waxed canvas, and leather, with more than 95 percent of materials sourced from the United States. Retail prices range from $160 to $270 per pair.
