Founded in 1927 as Lew Manufacturing Co., Garland Writing Instruments started manufacturing small presses. This soon led to the design and development of an internal pen mechanism that has made Garland the original designer and patent holder for the twist action pen mechanism. This design has now been used by all the major pen manufacturers across the world. Garland’s products have also flown on the Apollo moon missions. Garland has become recognized for the signature design of their pens which features a flared top. Garland Writing Instruments is located in a historic mill with all of their USA-made products being made in a 45,000-square-foot facility. They are now owned by Pen Company of America.
