About

Zeroll manufactures ice cream scoops and serving tools from its facility in Avondale, Pennsylvania. Sherman Kelly founded the company in Toledo, Ohio in 1935 after observing difficulties with traditional ice cream dippers, developing a patented non-mechanical scoop made of cast aluminum with a heat-conducting fluid sealed inside the handle. The design transfers body heat from the user’s hand to warm the scoop bowl, allowing it to glide through frozen desserts without mechanical parts. Production began in Kelly’s garage with scoops manufactured by ALCOA to his specifications, halted during World War II due to aluminum rationing, and resumed in 1946.

The company relocated manufacturing to Pennsylvania in 2023, where it produces ice cream scoops, spades, portion control dishers, and decorative serving spoons. Products are made from cast aluminum with a hardcoat anodized finish and Teflon protective coating, a treatment introduced in 1985 to resist damage from chlorinated water in commercial dishwashers. The Museum of Modern Art added the Zeroll scoop to its permanent design collection in 2004. The company also manufactures Chef’s Choice knife sharpeners at the Pennsylvania facility.
