SunStar Appliances designs and manufactures solar and DC-powered refrigerators and freezers for off-grid use at its factory in LaGrange, Indiana, a town in one of the largest Amish communities in the United States. The company built its business around off-grid refrigeration for cabins, homesteads, RVs, and marine applications, developing the products to address a gap it identified in the off-grid appliance market. SunStar states that its refrigerator and freezer cabinets are built domestically rather than imported, a practice it contrasts with competitors that source cabinets from overseas while marketing their appliances as American made. Each unit uses SunStar’s own Keota DC compressor along with four inches of polyurethane insulation to improve energy efficiency for solar-powered operation. Before leaving the LaGrange factory, every appliance undergoes quality testing, including a 24-hour operational test, to check reliability before shipment. SunStar sells its refrigerators and freezers through a network of dealers across the United States.
