Purism is a social purpose corporation headquartered in San Francisco, California, that designs and manufactures privacy-focused electronics. The company produces two smartphone models, the Liberty Phone and the Librem 5 USA, both priced at $1,999. All electronics fabrication, including mainboard PCB assembly, modem PCB assembly, and Type-C PCB assembly, takes place at Purism’s facility in Carlsbad, California, where final phone assembly, packaging, and quality control testing are also performed. Both phones run PureOS, a Linux-based operating system, rather than Android or iOS, and feature hardware kill switches for the camera, microphone, and wireless connections. While the electronics and final assembly are domestic, certain components are sourced internationally, including the chassis from China, WiFi card from India, and CPU chips from South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Purism is the only company currently manufacturing and assembling smartphones in the United States.
