About

MSR, or Mountain Safety Research, manufactures camping stoves, cookware, water filters, and outdoor equipment. Larry Penberthy founded the company in 1969 in Seattle as a newsletter focused on mountaineering safety before expanding into equipment manufacturing. REI acquired the company in 1981, and Cascade Designs purchased it in 2001.

MSR operates manufacturing facilities in Seattle, Washington, and Reno, Nevada, but most of its production unfortunately happens overseas. They have additional facilities in Cork, Ireland, and Asia. The company produces liquid fuel stoves, including the WhisperLite and DragonFly, canister stoves such as the PocketRocket series, and integrated stove systems like the WindBurner and Reactor. Many products are assembled at the Seattle facility, located one floor below the design and engineering offices.
