Founded in 1961 by Carrie Birdwell-Mann, Birdwell Beach Britches was one of the first surfwear specialized businesses, and Carrie’s living room was one of the first surf shops ever. Originally launched by Carrie as a way to make durable swimwear for surfers, the company coined the term “Beach Britches” and became a staple of Southern California’s surf culture. The company remained made in the USA for quite some time, but recently, Birdwell was purchased by a group of investors who have since moved a lot of manufacturing overseas to China and other countries. They still have a small selection of board shorts made here.
